Comments (11)For a second story, if you have a whole-house boiler already, I would probably just stick to straight a/c with an air handler. I say this because heat naturally rises, and having a secondary heat source, economically, doesn't sound like it would have a great payback on the second story. Do you have a thermostat for heat upstairs already, or just downstairs? If downstairs, upstairs should always naturally be warmer. The Carrier quote does not give you many options. The first option is a bare replacement, not even including a new indoor portion (just the coil inside). The second option is a complete Infinity system. The Infinity is a nice system, but by personal preference I tend to stay to the more simple systems (i.e., 13-15 SEER with variable speed indoor portion). The variable speed indoor unit can sometimes improve airflow to some rooms depending on present ductwork condition, and as you noted it also has a low fan-on setting (I think it comes from the factory like this but nevertheless it is an option for the installers to set). Depending on the thermostat you use, it has the ability to be configured to control (de)humidity (again, that's getting more fancy with controls). I like the American Standard quote (the equipment, that is) However it looks like this dealer too is just proposing a coil and not an actual air handler inside. Perhaps I'm confused as to what you have in the attic now (I'm assuming a fan coil/air handler - just a blower and a coil for a/c). When going to R-410A it is a good idea to flush the lineset/purge it with nitrogen. Surprisingly, some don't do this, and many times there won't be problems, but it is very good practice and any good company would know to do it or replace the lineset itself (which isn't necessary if proper size and in good condition). The second Carrier quote (most recent post) lists two good, reasonably priced options for a/c. With Carrier, those are the two units I'd look at (Comfort 24ACB330, Performance 24APA530). The Performance series unit is physically larger outside, if that makes a difference, since it's more efficient. Either of these units can be used with a variable speed indoor fan coil (model FV4BNF003/5). Let us know if you have any more questions....See MoreAny fans of Randy Rainbow out there?
Comments (12)Glad to see others find him enjoyable cawaps, it’s amazing how nimble he is and how quick his turnaround, especially considering he’s doing everything by himself. Maddie, the GOP dropout is a hoot. Annie, wicked s right! dlm, he’s kept me sane too, along with Colbert and others. Lake, I need to try Trae Crowder. Something to look forward to. My3dogs, yes, I like that one too!...See MoreSwapping out fan
Comments (73)Painting tile wouldn't be my first choice either. But if I had a limited budget, an uncertainly about commitment to my current style, and a desire to improve the kitchen quickly for now, I would certainly consider it before going to the step of removing the current tile that doesn't work and then retiling. And Butternut's job is quite good and makes a big difference in that kitchen. You can see the rest of the work she's done on her house in the last little while here, including a terrific fireplace update that was not DIY, https://www.gardenweb.com/discussions/5577949/a-little-hello-and-update Butternut used a good combination of talented professionals and a little DIY where necessary and it comes together beautifully....See MorePaint exterior pop-outs a different color or not?
Comments (35)what if you brought in some terra cotta pots w/the jute/black mats/rug? maybe did a birdbath, southwestern style, in the middle ? suround it w/some native plants? so many cool ways to add some color right there. bubbling urn, terra cotta, lots of boulders/pebble rock, container plants, I'd prob do something like these rocks, the bubbling urn or a colorful birbath, some mexican pebble rock up aginst the cobble, a few plants in a some colored pots. or something simple like this with a little pathway, the bench, some solar lights or, a little bistro table chairs i'd layer something like this on top of the larger jute rug. how about a place to sit? love these two colors (the wood) w/the terra cotta, black and the aqua (and copper) (oh, but you don't like this color, right? w/the black and copper, I think it's a nice addition. use the cobalt if you prefer) a southwestern style bench up against that part of the wall (you could always do this bench in the color that you like. ) a sun on the wall behind it, a copper southwestern style door handle, and pots to match? maybe a southwestern door mat. These are just thrown together. you could pick better colors and styles. gave you the wood bench here w/the cobalt pot. love these colors...See Morewildchild2x2
