Do you ever wish you had a facelift instead of a new kitchen?
Comments (46)I think some opinions about facelift etc are relative to aging. I know friends and even myself who scorned the idea/vanity of cosmetic/plastice surgery in our younger years. However, as things begin to sag, some of us (not all of us but certainly myself) began to reconsider. Then it becomes a matter of priorities and money. When I see the need of new hardwood floors, driveway, basement remodeling, etc in my future, it's hard to prioritize something that would make me happy (plastic surgery - and why is it called plastic?) vs something that might improve the value of my home as I near retirement. I personally think a facelift/eyelift would be more gratifying than a new driveway! (but obviously didn't think the same about a new kitchen though I did have some regrets). However, I didn't mean to get serious and am glad a couple of folks had a good laugh!...See MoreI just had kitchen remodeled.

Comments (24)I’ve project managed for owners on vacation who didn’t want to live in the middle of the mess. 2-3X a week pictures for them, and I solve the issues. Because the design work was all done in advance, issues that need to involve them are exceedingly few, to none. I’m there on the job site for the important times and dates, and performing quality control, with adherence to the agreed upon design standards. And they are off visiting relatives or staying in an extended vacation spot. Bear in mind that “daily cleaning” means “Broom Clean” as the standard. It’s not your MIL coming for white glove inspection! Broom Clean is chunks swept up. The area under construction should be a no walk through zone, behind plastic, with an air scrubber exhausting out a window set up for any of the messy parts. That’s an extra line item, as it is an extra hassle and expensive that many contractors don’t do. The return air vents should have filters taped in front of them, and other air vents should be sealed. I insist on it on my jobs. I also insist on a post construction cleaning service. That is not a standard that many contractors operate under. Those that do this will not be the inexpensive guys, as it adds to their overhead. Which is why it’s called out in a contract as an Extra Service level....See MoreKitchen reno - what do you wish you had done?
Comments (36)AnnKH chimed in with the same 2 recommendations that I was going to suggest. Those easy-reach upper corners are much more efficient... as are lower cabinet drawers wherever possible. You really don't need to spend on built in organizers (like pegs). I wouldn't want any drawer to be locked into one function by their presence. Only exceptions, I think, are the access devices for lower corner cabinets (although I don't have one and don't really miss it - yet) and filler space pullouts. Symmetry is over-rated. Make the cabinets the most functional for your needs. Remember, almost never will anyone be looking at a cabinet run straight on, so symmetry or lack of it isn't noticed, except on the drawings. I would strongly encourage you to re-think the lighting. I absolutely love my new disk LED lights in the ceiling, such an improvement over the 2 smallish flush mounts that I had. It really makes the whole space more inviting and easier to work in. If your cabinet maker is making Euro-style (ie, frameless) cabinets for you, then adjustable shelves should be a given. I wouldn't want face framing and non adjustable shelves again, especially in a pantry. NO I wouldn't spend money to have a pantry "designed". Lastly, removing the short granite backsplash might be a problem, because there might be a large gap that tile can't cover, or noticeable damage to the granite from the adhesive (I'm not sure about that though). Be sure to talk to your granite fabricator about that, before you make your decision. I kind of like the short rim look myself, although the ones I've seen tend to be shorter and thinner as well....See MoreRelated Professionals
