19 hours to finalize vanity design - please help
Comments (16)I have measured what I need to store, the problem is that there are a lot of different heights. I have lots of little things that would be best in shallow drawers (I need at least 2 shallow drawers), a lot of 5-8" tall bottles and tubes, and a smaller amount of 8-12" tall items. We do not store any cleaning products in the bathroom -- those go on an upper shelf in the hall closet, where our little ones cannot reach them. If we go with doors under the sinks, they will have a pullout at the bottom, along with a shelf or another pullout part way up the cabinet. Comments (6)Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I don't think the DW will be a problem for me. I'm the only one in the family who ever seems to load or unload it. Everyone else just throws their dirty dishes in the sink! But I can probably shift the island a little bit to create a wider aisle there, maybe 45"-48" if you think that would help. And yes rhome, the earlier plans had a wider longer island, but the clearances were not good. I will have 18" on each side of the cooktop, unless I place the cooktop off center (or get a 30" cooktop). Is that adequate? I don't know what I will put on the shelf over the sink, but hopefully I can find something nice to display. I plan to put puck lights there. I share your concern about the the headroom over the secondary sink. The uppers are 13" deep, but the cabinet there is angled, so hopefully it be OK. Maybe I'll have to do a mock up to test it out. The area to the left of the refrigerator is actually an open doorway to the dining room, so I wouldn't think it would be a problem to open the refrigerator. The drawing shows a SxS, but I am getting a FD CD. Also, we were planning to shift the doorway a bit so the refrigerator doesn't stick out into the opening, and maybe recess it a bit if necessary. Lissa - are you thinking my main work area will be to the right of the small sink? I actually have quite a large area to the right of the main sink which is where I expect I will do my prep. The second sink is more of a bar sink, for filling the coffee pot, for the instahot, and to allow for a second person to help with prep if necessary. I planned to keep my dishes in the cabinets to the left of the main sink, but I'm not sure yet if I will put them in the overheads or in the drawers, with maybe just the glasses in the uppers. That's not very far from the DW - actually closer than my current layout. I also forgot to mention that there will be a pantry - 36 wide x 24 deep just around the corner in the FR, next to the funny shaped wall at the right end of the main counter. That funny shaped wall houses support beams and HVAC....See MoreHelp! I have so many obstacles to overcome in my kitchen design!
Comments (11)I would get a structural engineer to look into this...not your builder. The engineer will know for certain if it's allowed and how to do it. It may just be that your contractor/builder doesn't want to do it b/c he either doesn't know how or just doesn't want to do it (possibly too much work). I actually got a similar run around from my contractor about venting outside. We had a stop work order for 9 weeks while we worked out a way to vent outside...actually, while I told them to find a way, don't just stand there wringing their hands giving me one excuse after the other about why it couldn't be done. When they finally started thinking about it they then quoted me a ridiculous amount ($4,800 USD) just to move a shower drain & vent that were in the way...I got an outside plumber do it for $900 USD! They still kept making up excuses but I stood firm and told them to find a way. They eventually did when they realized I was not going to back down or meekly go with whatever they said (including them telling me "I've been doing kitchens for 20 years and there's no way it can be done..." Guess what? It's done. BTW...downdrafts do not work well at all nor do pop ups....See MoreGranite decision "was" made...but I'm still torn...help please.
Comments (27)This is the Blue Astral that I'll be using in my half bath. It is almost translucent when polished. Just incredible. Never have seen anything like it and the yard says it's very rare and they will probably not ever see any like it again. It's not like the Big flower I posted above. It's from the same quarry, but was mined years before the the big flowers. mcocean- googled your white and it looks like a great stone with movement. What are your plans? hobokekitch- your right it is blingy and the green is amazing. Plus I actually like the other blue astral a bit better. Karin mt- blue is a semiprecious stone and agree that my kitchen will be better off with a green that will work better with the wood and the style of the house. I too loved the bling factor!! Laura15- I know, you look back, you go back. It's a saying for a reason! AnnaC54- yes, I can't believe how many trips I've made back and forth to the yard there. Not much around here. So it's 1 1/2 hours in each direction. I know every inch of the place. It's unique, the guy who owns it travels around the world for his pieces and he has about 4000 on site. Crazy inventory for an out of the way yard in a rural state. Please post a picture of your Seafoam. would love to see. I will post my results also!...See MoreHenry Sauer
