2 island within open kitchen -- good or bad ? pics of what I like
Comments (22)Jean, We have recently completed a kitchen with a layout very similar to the first picture you posted. The main difference is that on the wall with the cook top we have a double cabinet on either side of the hood and the double ovens are on the wall to the left (as you face the cooktop) along with the pantry and refrigerator. Our middle island is ten by four and contains the main sink,, dishwasher and microwave drawer. I store the silverware and dishes directly across from the dishwasher in two drawers so it is very convenient. The second island which opens directly to the family room has a smaller sink and the entire island serves as a bar area. We also have only two walls and are really liking the openess to both the family room and breakfast area. Friends have commented on how much larger the whole area looks. As part of our remodel, we added a nook in a former closer in our mudroom for mail, etc which had always accumulated onour kitchen before, but we knew we had to have another place for in our new layout. I think you will really love the two island layout!...See MoreHelp with Kitchen Remodel - Design and Finishes
Comments (19)What are your plans for using the island? I'm asking b/c its orientation and the overall layout is not conducive to using it for prepping. . "I am a single male and at this point only have one cook in the kitchen but would like to plan for plenty of space for cooks in the kitchen if my situation changes." While this design is fine for a single cook, I'm not sure how functional it would be for multiple b/c there's quite a bit of zone crossing b/w the refrigerator and both the Prep & Cooking Zones. Are you open to a redesign? In particular, are you willing to consider Switching the range and sink walls? This would not only eliminate the zone crossing with the refrigerator, but it would now make the island ideal for prepping. In fact, you would now have two "ideal" Prep Zones - b/w the range and sink and the island.-or- Moving the refrigerator to the range wall (b/w the pantry & range), moving the range to the right, and the sink & Cleanup Zone "down"? This would put your Prep Zone in front of the window and reduce the amount of zone-crossing. The island still would not be ideal for prepping, but it would be a bit better w/the range moved to the right and the sink & Cleanup Zone moved farther down....See MoreNeed help designing a kitchen remodel
Comments (35)probably too late since my cabinets are now ordered, but would still like feedback on the final layout and prices. We looked at blanco silgranit sinks, finalized appliances too wolf 8 burner (almost have my wife convinced a bluestar would be ok, but the uneven knobs are a killer) wolf convection microwave bosch 800 panel ready dishwasher zephyr tempest II 48" vent with add on 1200 cfm blower danby silhouette wine fridge We are sticking with our CD fridge for now but have setup the cabinets to easily add a built in. My contractor said he has never had to do makeup air. But there is a large "crawl" space (it is 15 ft high) under the stove so it is really easy to add now or later. The only thing I was worried about was pulling air from under the house. The house is on a hill and we have a huge area under the house that is fully enclosed. Any radon or other chemicals seem like they could accumulate there. On the plus side the air temp is pretty constant year round....See MoreNeed help finalizing the design our first kitchen remodel!
Comments (6)IMO you need an independant kitchen designer right now . What happens here usually is you come with the design and we critique it . Do not use a cabinet sales person to design your kitchen , I have a 1956 MCM ranch house that we totally gutted except for the huge fireplace which I came to love. These houses have great spaces and that is what I love about them so get someone who loves this style of home it will pay for it self over and over. I actually traded the DR and kitchen spaces in my house to get the kitchen I wanted so take your time to do this so it respects the house and works for you. BTW I love corner windows so MCM. I am not seeing the whole house plan but do not see a DR maybe if you have one use the nook area for the kids if they are small. I happen to love galley kitchens and I do not like kitchens open to LRS. This is apic of one kitchen I did for client and where you see the pendants was one of those typical 1950's cabinets doubled side glass and wall cabinets along the window wall with a much better choice for storage I removed all of those cabinets and made the space so much better the penisula where the pendants are is now open to the DR Please get a good KD...See MoreDesign Girl
