ballpark costs for full bathroom remodel
Comments (11)personally, I would disagree with Steve_a on doing the demo yourself. He's right that you can, because it takes little skill and basically brute strength. But it's dirty, it's very heavy stuff (old tile, mudset, cast iron, etc., heavier if your bathroom is old). You're likely to have a problem disposing of the material, since a lot of cities refuse to pick up construction debris. When I demo'd a basement closet that was just old plaster and only about 15 sq. ft. of wall, I probably had to use 10-15 trash bags alone, because each bag can hold only about as much debris as a 5-gallon bucket (or less) before the plastic rips. Demo is, overall, cheap. You don't need skilled labor to do it, so contractors can get people cheap for doing it. Unlike plumbing and electric, and even tile. Also, contractors will have the appropriate tools to do things like break tile -- not just a sledgehammer, but a jack-hammer like implement. Do you want to rent one of those? And they can do it quickly. Assuming you actually need the use of the bathroom, the faster the better. They can do the demo in a day or two, whereas you might need a couple of weekends or more to do it. (or multiply both those numbers by 3-5 if you want). Finally, at least for me, and I'm a bit of a DIY guy, things like demo are the least interesting part of the job. I'm proud of building things because I can look at the end result and smile. Not so much with demo. Of course, you may feel differently, but those are some considerations why I don't think the couple of thousand $$ you'll save doing the demo yourself are worth it....See MoreEnlighten me. Comments (42)Rebeccamom - My project is scheduled for just after Labor Day. I had to move it out because of work and a family vacation. The extra time has been really great for sourcing and research and I would strongly encourage a 4-6 month window if at all possible. It seems there are so many decisions to be made in a bathroom reno. As far as measurements, my bathroom is a bowling alley! 4.5 feet wide by 11 feet long, not including the shower which is 4 X 2.75 off the long wall. Just to clarify, the $10K estimate is for labor only. I'm trying not to add up the cost of materials as I acquire them. It's painful having expensive taste on a middle class budget!...See MoreCost of a bathroom remodel
Comments (12)The cost of a remodeling project depends on a variety of factors including the existing conditions, the amount of "surgery" and/or new construction required, the quantity and quality of fixtures and finish materials, local labor rates and availability, etc. For a cost vs. client expectation "reality check" we recommend reviewing the cost data for similar scope projects in your market area published by Remodeling Magazine in their annual Cost vs. Value Report. Here's a link to their report for 2017: http://www.remodeling.hw.net/cost-vs-value/2017/ If the costs are in line with your expectation, the next step would be to contact a couple of contractors in your area and get estimates based on the scope of work for your particular project. If the costs are much higher than your intended budget and the budget is inflexible, you'll likely be wasting your time and theirs....See MoreBathroom remodeling costs...reasonable or not?
Comments (1)One thing to ask is how will the tiler waterproof your shower. The tile install and water proofing and heated floor for my 8x13 was over 8k, without a steam shower which I was quoted thousands higher for, so your quote seems low if he is properly leveling for the heat mat and properly waterproofing the steam shower. To properly do a steam shower should cost more than the entire tile quote you were given according to my three quotes last year. Is this a fix price contract? I paid 65k for my similar sized bath but 22k was to build the structure above an existing first floor sunroom of my Ct. shoreline 1920s house so your second and third quotes are on par with mine without a steam shower. The first is a low ball and most likely not quality work. I do have concerns that your steam shower, which is so important to get right, is way too low to be a good install. eta, I did not do a soaker tub so add another 8 to 10k for that to my cost too....See MoreHU-340000469
