How much will gopher cages stunt tomatoes and dragonfruit?

I would to plant some dragonfruit and tomatoes without gopher cages in our chicken yard but my friend swears up and down that theyre needed. The cages are made out of hardware cloth and they look incredibly inhibiting to the roots. Of course, inhibited roots are better than eaten roots by a gopher but is it safe to assume that if i go the gopher cage route then my plants will have stunted root growth from having to struggle through the holes in the cages?
It almost seems equivalent to just keeping the plants in a pot and just burying those.
The plants in question are for the tom and dragonfruit but i would actually like to know the answer for other edibles in general too
