Comments (30)starpooh - I'd be honored to be in the FKB - I found a lot of inspiration there in the planning stages. Thanks for the compliments, everyone. We just can't believe how well it turned out, considering how frustrated we got at certain points when things just didn't go well and we had to improvise. I find myself just walking through the kitchen and touching things. Unfortunately this is it for the fun projects for a while, as the roof and skylights need work (note to future builders -- flat roofs aren't optimal in rainy Alabama). The bargains are just a matter of taking one's time. The range hood was bought probably 18 months ago. The fridge and range last May when Sears was closing. The sink two years ago (an $800 sink for $100!) -- nevermind that we hadn't even started the planning yet! The tile got ordered when Mosaic Tile Source had a 40% off sale last fall. Oh, and don't forget to ask for the military discount (if applicable to you) at the big box stores. We actually got another 10% off the Zodiaq just for asking -- that saved over $400. I've added a link to my blog, as it contains some posts from the "during" phase. Here is a link that might be useful: Magic City Modern...See MoreFinished kitchen: DIY Ikea & mexican tile, low budget
Comments (41)Thanks, all! Nosoccermom, we did not paint the doors. We were concerned about that pinkish tint, too, but decided we could always paint in the future if we hated them as they are after installation. As it turns out, they are definitely an off-white, but the pink seems to depend completely on lighting. In natural and direct light, they are warm white but not pink. In dim light, they do take on that pinkish look. We have the white fridge right next to the cabinets, which you can see in a photo I posted above, and in another area there are cabinets adjacent to wainscoting painted with BM simply white. You can certainly see the difference in those locations, but we don't find it jarring. Those spots are the areas where the pinkish tone is most prominent in dim light, though. We didn't replace the fridge, since the old one still works fine, and we are happy enough with the way it looks with the cabinets that we will probably go with white again when this one does need to be replaced. So, I would say to anyone considering these doors, you have to bring a sample home and see how it looks in your home with your lighting to really know how it will look....See MoreFinished kitchen: Ikea, walnut, marble and glossy white
Comments (77)Hi cv2014, I still love the look of our Semihandmade walnut, to me it's very warm. We briefly looked into having Semihandmade make panels for the side and the back of the island, but we wanted a more substantial edge and it just seemed like we'd have better luck getting it to all work out if we hired a finish carpenter to do the job. We're very happy with how it turned out. You can go to almost any good lumber store and purchase a full sheet of walnut veneer for not a lot of $$s. Depending on where it's used, it could be ok if it doesn't match perfectly with the Semihandmade walnut. The corner cabinet has a filler piece, I think it was around 4 inches, that gives enough clearance so that the cabinet door can open without worrying about having it hit the door to the right. In my case I think I was also concerned about clearance so it wouldn't hit the oven handle as well. That was solved by making the pull-out next to the over slightly wider than originally planned. These are the older Ikea cabinet style, so I'm not sure if the new style has the same kind of corner cabinet or not. Good luck with your planning!...See MoreThoughts on IKEA kitchen layout?
Comments (10)You need about 2ft per bar stool and the spot closest the wall will be the last to be used, so planning for 2 bar stools is your best bet there. Is that a little nook area? Also you'll need a minimum of 3ft behind to be able to squeeze into the other bar stool if someone is sitting at the outer spot already. Would it be better to put a banquette there with a small table instead. I think you could seat 3 then. I agree with Kathryn on the refrigerator cabinet. Shelves would look fine there if you want them instead. Actually think it would look better than the cabinet. The walking space with the peninsula there will be tight as you also have the counter top overhang over the cabinets. I do realize you're in a row house so you may be used to tight spaces. Just wanted to point it out. The back corner cabinet where the peninsula is I would make it open to the stool side so you can have access to the corner. Not super easy to get to, but you'll have extra storage for things not used often. What is the intention of cabinet #3? If possible I'd make that a pull-out as the wall is going to make it tough to access things. What room is on the left of the drawing and what is on the right? Looks like you have plenty of aisle space between the two sides of the kitchen. I might just align all cabinets from the 7" jut out you have. They might need to frame in that area to hang cabinets, but you get the fridge recessed then with no issues....See MoreOlga O
