Name That Rose!Roses Name That Plant!

Oklahoma or Don Juan

Mixed up my roses last fall when I moved them from pots into the ground. I've identified most of them, but I can't tell if this is Don Juan or Oklahoma since I'm still not very experienced with IDing.
The plant is still small (both DJ and OK are only in their 2nd year). Let me know if more pictures would help. :)

Find pictures and descriptions of both at helpmefind. Otherwise FAQ section of GW Name That Rose forum has directions for what to show of a rose for which a name is being sought.

Hold the phone! SoFL Rose, thinking the same. Pink Don Juan is a pink/magenta sport of Don Juan. Yes, MizG, Don Juans have a heavy, sweet, candy-like scent to me. Not at all a spice scent like some roses. I had one at my last house that was a tad darker red than the one that was in this yard when we moved here 3 years ago. But it's a Don Juan, I'm certain. :)

Kali, your DJ looks fine but unfortunately you will probably lose that lovely basal break over the winter. Unless it has several more weeks to harden off before you get hard freeze the soft tissue in that cane will freeze and die. Not to worry though, it looks like your DJ is ready to climb and will put out new canes next spring! Ken, I'm really surprised you haven't seen any bagged roses around there. They are every where here in Metro Detroit. All the big box stores (HD, Lowes, Menards and Tractor Supply) get them in in early March. Places like Walmart and Meijers have them too. I've even seen them in fruit markets and Krogers! They're very cheap, both in price and quality, but I have gotten some great roses out of them. Just go in knowing that at least half of the time they are mislabeled and you can end up with a lot of mystery roses on your hands.

Even though the patent description (second link, below) calls it "hardy" a 'Don Juan' near my previous neighborhood in USDA 8 froze to the ground during a sharp (for us) winter when a lot of other roses were similarly affected. And I never saw it resprout, that I recall now. Presumably the issue was that it got below 10-15F - the "everblooming" feature of many modern roses was originally achieved by bringing in China and Tea genetics. ummm.. i was gazing at the pix if i sent the above.. isnt DJ a climber.. and okie a hybrid tea ... if so.. you should be able to tell by the growth pattern of the plant itself ...

thanks Ken! yes DJ is a climber but I had gotten a small bare root plant from a body bag lol so I wouldn't expect it to be huge. I was thinking Oklahoma too. Thanks for the help!

A Don Juan that was near me here before it got hammered by the 1990 winter wasn't doing much to look like a climber before then - as I recall descriptions indicate this variety is typically not in a hurry to climb.

I’m leaning toward Don Juan. Are the petals thick and waxy? DJ’s are much more so than OK’s. Both are deep red, but DJ is a true black red, while OK is sometimes a slight purple tint.
