Reminds me of a chinaberry seedling...

Don't think it's herbaceous. Looks like a vine or tree to me. Campsis?

The leaves seem a lot more lobed than campsis or chinaberry. More fern-like. Trouble with poison hemlock is that I don't see red markings on the stems, and the stems don't appear to be hollow. Um, common ragweed?

Pretty sure it isn't a herbaceous plant or in the Apiaceae. How about Ampelopsis/Nekemias arborea?

Chinaberry seedlings can be a bit variable, IMPE. I agree it also sort of resembles campsis. I have that in my yard, but sprouts don't have that form, more short and vine-y. They're kind of a pest too, since they sprout from roots far away from the main plant.

I think seeing the stem might help.

Hmm. Peppervine is more coarsely lobed. Campsis leaves just aren't fern-like at all. What is it about the stem you'd like to see? Stem is smooth and green.

Leaflets look like golden rain tree, but that isn't doubly-compound. Never seen chinaberry, but a search shows their leaflets aren't so serrated.

I've never seen pepper vine in person but pictures show high variability in the ferniness of the leaves.

Looks like trumpet vine to me.

Coincidence, but working in a wooded area just now, came across this (perennial?) that looks similar, and has flowers. Actually seen them before, but never IDed.

Your plant is an Osmorhizamorhiza species Ben. It's either claytonii or longistylis. Longistylis has wider inflorescense bracts and longer flower stiles.

FWIW, here's a photo I snapped of campsis sprouting up in my yard - I think the leaves and stems look different than the OP...

Hmmm. Leaf-wise I'm liking claytonii and longistylis (Sweet Cicely/Aniseroot). Except stems in claytonii are supposed to be hairy. These are definitely not. I believe longistylis may not have hairy stems.

I'm pretty certain your plant is not any kind of herbaceous Apiaceae. The habit is all wrong.

I wasn't suggesting the plant was in Apiaceae. I was just IDing Ben's plant. This doesn't seem to fit Campsis, Melia, Nekemias, or Ampelopsis? County name would help.

I was responding to daninthedirt's last comment. It sounded as if he thought his plant could be an Osmorhiza.

That was my thought as well. It has kind of a Conium vibe but it's obviously some unrelated vine? The form is all wrong for Conium. There's a Poison Hemlock infestation near my home, spread by interstate highways. Every few years a Conium vollunteer shows up on the property. It's puzzling why colonists chose to import that species to North America? At this point I'm wondering if this vine could be a different looking subspecies of one of the species already mentioned?

Agree with Carolb and Melia azedarach. It has beautiful flowers, but the berries are deadly. Being exotic may cause wildlife to not recognize their deadly toxicity.

The flowers smell really nice too, and not only are the berries toxic - every damn seed seems to sprout.

The wood is very soft - they drop limbs, along with all the rest of the debris. They grow really fast too - we had a couple of huge ones that came down in storms.

A tree growing in that spot should be taken out anyway.

I find Chinaberry kind of hard. The pictures I see of them have leaves of all different shape, from smooth edges, to somewhat lobed like mine. But mostly smooth. Jay's picture looks more like mine, but other images of the leaves on the web don't look anything like that. See below a closeup of my leaves. Also, still no blooms and Chinaberry is supposed to flower in the spring.

I posted a query in my Texas Flora group, but they won't show it, maybe because I don't actually live in Texas? I can still get a 2nd opinion from the Texas Flora and Ecosystematics Group or the Plant Identification Group. The hardcore plant ID people are amazing. How old plusmust a Chinaberry be to bloom? The arrangement and seration of the leaflets, with the matching petiolule lengths still point to Chinaberry imo.

A county name would help. I don't think that information is too revealing to give. Professional botanists always use the county, plus hydrology and rock strata, ph and plant asassociates when researching ID's. It's not like I would or even could stalk someone with only a county name? Odds are their screen names are fake too Lol. There's this guy Floyd who is a professor of botany who specializes in grasses, and changes grass taxonomy, and he could ID any grass in Texas, so it's disheartening and a loss of knowledge not being able to give him a county name. Every state native plant society group that I'm in(Illinois, Indiana,North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Florida,Texas and Missouri) requires posters looking for an ID to give the county their plant is in.

That's true, the plant may have to be mature to bloom. I see this nowhere else on my property, and I've even looked around in neighbors yard to see if there is some tree or bush that it came from. No luck.
