Is this Don Juan climbing rose?
Comments (5)Yes, it is beautiful! I grew Don Juan for years, but the area it was growing in became too shady and it was time for it to go. My Don was fragrant, but not as fragrant as many other roses. Also in cool weather it was very dark red, almost blackish, at the base of the petals. Also while listed as a climber it had very stiff tall canes and would stand on it's own. Only after it became very tall did I use some rebar to stake it. But yours may become more rigid with age. The shape of the leaves and thorns are often as telling as the flowers as to the ID and since I don't have it anymore I can't say for sure about that, but they look right as I remember them. As Sylvia says the rose folks could probably tell you. But then you know what they say -- "A rose by any other name ..." In this case, no matter the name -- it is lovely, but it might be fun to know for sure. Include these photos and some closeups of the leaves and thorns when you post over there and let us know what they say. Comments (3)Congrats, Joe! Good find indeed. Most of my minis are in about 12 inch pots to begin with. If I see that the plant is getting too large for that size, particularly if it's getting top heavy, then I'll move them up to something larger. I would not use a clay pot though. Unless the inside is glazed so it doesn't absorb water it will actually steal moisture from the rose. Besides, the plastic ones are soooo much lighter, lol!...See MoreDon Juan climbing roses on zone 9 ( bay area, CA)
Comments (3)I am in a zone 9a It is a hot and humid in the summer but we get a few freezes in the winter. I have Don Juan in a 5 gallon pot right now. He is about 10ft tall and still growing. Lots of blooms all season. He has a nice fragrance too. You will like him :) ~SJN...See Moredon juan rose
Comments (13)Second Cynthia here. I am in 6b/6a. My Don Juan is 4 years old, and barely made it each winter. I never flower much because it is young, and more importantly, I assume it needs muster all the energy it needs to recover from the winters. I got it when I first get into roses and bought it from a local nursery, which apparently knows even less than I did about zone-appropriateness of roses. It can be a beautiful rose, but I suspect it would never achieve its potential if you live in an area cold or as cold as 6a/6b. There are other red climbers, and, if you are in a colder zone, maybe look for something else. Dublin Bay is reliably cane hardy here in the NYC metro area, and the botanical garden in Brooklyn has a few gigantic ones that ought to be in full bloom soon. Truly a sight to behold. Not sure the hardiness of these, but might worth look into the new Kordes Florentina as well as Red Eden....See MoreSheila z8a Rogue Valley OR
