Mini Reveal- farmhouse modern and plea for lighting ideas
Comments (41)Thanks for asking about an update. You are all too kind. I am still in love with my kitchen but, alas, still not finished. I did find my over the island fixture- and I love it, but its arrival has made me less in love with my sconces. I am now in the process of trying out replacements. So far one is sitting in my sunroom, deemed to large, one is en route from Schoolhouse Electric. I did do a Mostly Done post, which I updated this AM with pictures of the island light and I have linked it below Here is a link that might be useful: Localeater's Kitchen -Mostly Done post...See MoreWhat's your opinion of a modern farmhouse?
Comments (29)Popular =/= "good idea." Witness most of the 1970's. The thing is, the more "popular" something tends to become, the lower the lowest standard of it drops, and the more quickly the wheels of "trendy" tend to run it over. "Modern farmhouse" is no more special than "Shabby Chic" or any number of similar trends that have previously erupted, taken over Pinterest, and faded away to nothing but a trope. It's just that right now, the proliferation of media means that it's entirely possible to flood your senses with one thing. Most of the criticism has been this: It's not an architectural style at all. If anything, it's a design phenomenon. And many of it's most prominent features are either just egregiously misplaced in anything but a rural setting - or in a HOUSE, for that matter (barn doors, chicken wire, windows propped up here and there, galvanized metal "paneling"). Others are OK in a general way, but being used in ways that are less "new" than "silly" (Shiplap fireplace surrounds). Or fine in theory, but so overused as to give people an eye twitch (grey paint, especially Revere Pewter, "word art", rusty anything). And because it isn't an architectural style, most of the plans that your seeing are the same stock plans that have been around for decades with a new "modern farmhouse" elevation slapped on the front. A little white siding, a standing seam metal roof, some black windows, and voila!! Bonus - once the trend dies, a new facade relating to whatever's next can be switched out with no need to alter much of anything. Less work for the plan design factories! If you like it, great. Just be prepared for a lot of it to very soon go the way of dusty blue, mauve, and demented geese....See MoreModern farmhouse exterior choices
Comments (22)Christy, since your first inclination was white with black ,which is classic , this may be out of your comfort zone — and not knowing how much land surrounds your home and how close neighboring homes are, also makes it hard to know what might be appropriate choices . Just throwing this out there ,however, to show that a farm style house can really be any color you like. I love white with black shutters, but also really like red, (bright or muted shades ) or pale yellow with white shutters . Iterations of chalky navy blues are nice, also. Some examples -...See MoreModern farmhouse kitchen design dilemma!!
Comments (15)"modern farmhouse" style is pretty amorphous. Plus it doesn't have to be a particular style, as long as it suits the rest of the house and works well with your furnishings. If you find yourself gravitating to blue -- which works well with gold, and brass (real brass, not eighties brass lol) -- do it, and don't worry about pigeonholing yourself into a particular style. The added bonus is that the modern farmhouse trend has been around for a while and is on the way out. You don't have to tie yourself to something trendy -- that's the other secret to achieving timelessness : ) ....See MoreUser
