Some pictures from my 2020 roses - some good, lots of bad

The warm wet winter followed by the cold wet spring with continual rain and nearly a week of very late freezes/frosts put my gardens in a real tailspin. So there isn't too much that has been consistently good. A lot of bacterial cane blight, early black spot and weird deformed flowers. But here are some of the good.

Sorry you have had so many challenges. Don’t give up. Hopefully the rest of summer will be better. These photos are lovely. How is the rebloom on CPM for you?

The title promised lots of bad. Pics.

After successive destructive deer attacks out back, I was hoping for a little schadenfreude.

Remember Aprille, there is a rule: It is not POSSIBLE to post too many pictures of beautiful roses. It just can't be done. Every one of yours is beautiful but my favorites are Rochester Cathedral, Morning Greeting and Waterloo. Frau Eva Schubert is a darling little rose also. Thanks so much for the treat. Luanne, did you, perchance, prune less this year, inspired by Gregg? I've been noticing that roses that were pruned very lightly or not at all are in full bloom. In the cemetery, and at home, I don't prune any of roses "hard," but those that got a moderate trim are still thinking about spring, whereas those that barely got shortened, if at all, are busily blooming. I've always thought that roses can either put their efforts into growing canes and leaves, or flowering, in the spring. We have examples of the same cultivar pruned two or three different ways in the cemetery, and there is no doubt that the more the roses were pruned, the less bloom they have right now. Common sense, right? But perhaps it had nothing to do with the pruning, and everything to do with the fact that they learned about the party and are just misbehaving. Things look gorgeous in your garden, and I hope the cemetery doesn't pale in comparison. Luanne and Sue, and other NoCal folks, hope to see you in Sacramento this weekend! Anita

Good News, bad news, and some ticked off birds.

You're going to have more trouble than the birds are. Birds are immune to the effects of capsaicin, unlike mammals (I figured out that the squirrel digging in my potted peppers was burying nuts in the nice soft dirt, he didn't nibble. But the turkeys were eating the peppers in the garden til I put the deer netting we'd taken down for Irene back up.). In fact, they often include dried chiles in parrot mixes. Too bad for your friend, though.

My roses have really suffered this spring, too. No blooms yet. Your Charlotte is the prettiest one I've ever seen! Good for you for seeing the positive side!

Ikaye, your good looks very good...no, excellent. In fact, the roses you show are quite beautiful. I'm sorry for all the lousy weather challenges you've had. I've had the opposite type of weather problems--heat and high wind. Gardeners and weather--what a challenge for a lot of us. Diane

They all look beautiful and clean. I love your Charlotte also. How do you like your laguna? Does it rebloom? Your cloud 10 is prefect and white, mine usually looks dirty fro all the thrips. Fingers crossed 🤞 the weather will smooth out for you so all your roses have a chance to shine.

These look so beautiful to me! I love your Laguna .

One thing about us gardeners , we love to apologize for our gardens , only seeing bad or things that need to improve. But there is so much good!! Your photos would not show you have had any trouble at all .
