a partner for Guernsey Cream

I want to plant another type 2 with guernsey cream. I'm wondering if there is one that blooms a little later than GC, to extend the display. If that's presupposing too much control over a plant's bloom time,, can you suggest a partner that would pick up the red (not red-orange) of a nearby japanese maple or the pink of wild geranium or geranium ingwersen's variety? I'd like it 'read' from a distance as it will be viewed from the road.

All of the red and pink clematis will lean towards blue rather than towards orange, so that should not be of concern. Look at Rebecca as a nice bright red type 2 or there are a number of pink ones: Asao, Dr. Ruppel, Bees Jubilee, Betty Risdon, Piilu aka Little Duckling, Nelly Moser, and Kakio aka Pink Champagne are all pinks that I have seen in US clematis catalogs at various times.

I have Guernsey Cream as well as Rebecca, Piilu, and either Kakio or Asao, but the GS is in part shade down by the shop while the others are in full sun by the house, so I cannot really compare bloom times.

anything strawberry colored.. would give you strawberries and cream .. lol ...

you have to have a bit of whimsy in your garden ... even if no one but you gets it .. lol ...

Rather than digging & possibly damaging the roots, I would build up the soil at the base with compost & dried cow manure & bone meal. Then when it is done blooming, give it a severe cut down to about 1/3 the existing height & feed with tomato or rose fertilizer. Marie in ME

I have received two "Guernsey Cream" from Birdsongfarm.com, they may be sold out now also. They seem to be very popular at the moment. I have never ordered from Wayside Gardens because the prices do seem high to me compared to other online nurseries. I did purchase two from a Ebay seller, they were very small, and so far are not showing alot of growth, I'm hoping they are just growing roots. They are healthy looking plants though small. The two from Bird Song Farm had an incredible root system and have bloomed beautifully this past month. If you are not in a big hurry, I would wait until they are back in stock at Brushwood or Birdsongfarm. I have no experience with gardenerdirect. Debra

I have guernesey cream for many years and it has never done well for me. It is in mostly shade, but it does get some light. It has wilted, refused to climb, I had jsut about given up entirely. I was going to dig it out this spring as I had bought some new clems and I discovered it was growing like a weed. It's had only two blooms, but it is growing and as long as I keep up with it and tie it to guide it, it seems to be climbing upwards. I fertilized all my clems this spring with tomato fertilizer and I beleive it has really helped. If it doesn't get much taller, then I will move it next spring and put it somewhere where it gets more sun, whever that is.

These are lovely! how do they look as the blossom age? Do the petals fall off or do they turn brown? I have a white clematis which is nice in flower but it doesn't age gracefully. As much as I may commiserate with this quality, it does cause me some minor regret when I see the numerous discolored flowers. At first I thought it was some kind of insect damage but now I think it is just its natural way.
