Looking for 'Guernsey Cream' or one just like it
Comments (3)I have received two "Guernsey Cream" from Birdsongfarm.com, they may be sold out now also. They seem to be very popular at the moment. I have never ordered from Wayside Gardens because the prices do seem high to me compared to other online nurseries. I did purchase two from a Ebay seller, they were very small, and so far are not showing alot of growth, I'm hoping they are just growing roots. They are healthy looking plants though small. The two from Bird Song Farm had an incredible root system and have bloomed beautifully this past month. If you are not in a big hurry, I would wait until they are back in stock at Brushwood or Birdsongfarm. I have no experience with gardenerdirect. Debra...See Moreguernsey cream question
Comments (5)Unfortunately there are more than one system of classification of clematis in terms of pruning groups. In one, type IIs are type IIIs and type IIIs are type IIs. In the other, it is the opposite way. In terms of the way most people refer, Guernsey Cream is a type II. That means that it typically blooms on old wood. If you are concerned about the length of the growing season in your zone and your ability to get blooms, definitely treat it as a light prune to remove deadwood and to contain its growth if it is getting out of hand. If it is a newly planted clematis, I would prune it back and potentially do without blooms the first year so that it will concentrate on root development and not top growth....See Morefloppy guernsey cream
Comments (7)I have guernesey cream for many years and it has never done well for me. It is in mostly shade, but it does get some light. It has wilted, refused to climb, I had jsut about given up entirely. I was going to dig it out this spring as I had bought some new clems and I discovered it was growing like a weed. It's had only two blooms, but it is growing and as long as I keep up with it and tie it to guide it, it seems to be climbing upwards. I fertilized all my clems this spring with tomato fertilizer and I beleive it has really helped. If it doesn't get much taller, then I will move it next spring and put it somewhere where it gets more sun, whever that is....See MoreHelp with Pruning Guernsey Cream- Type 2
Comments (7)I prune all my type 2 clematis to the first leaf node each spring for the first 3 years they are in the ground. I lose some early bloom but it encourages more vines from the ground and I get later bloom. After that I prune them at least half way back and sometimes all the way back after the first flush of bloom. That way I get a large second flush of bloom. I don't know how this would work in your climate....See MoreUser
