Attn Bill V, Mongo & other tile experts- Grout Line too skinny?
Comments (8)It used to be that 1/16th was called out for rectified tiles. With the new specs for manufacturing, you start getting more variations in tile size. Even in rectified, believe it or not. The new installation recommendation, which has actually been around for a few years, is to have the grout line 3-times the size of the variation within the tiles. This usually comes down to an 1/8th inch grout line. Lippage can also be an issue based on the pattern. A stacked pattern might not show lippage whereas a running bond could. The larger the tile, the more chance you have of lippage with offset patterns. That's all due to the tiles not being perfectly flat. A slight warp, pillow, or pringing (like the pringles potato chip). The grout needs depth. Otherwise it'll just pop out. So a 1/32nd gap with a beveled edge, you may not have durability, because the installer may not pack the joint (if there even is an actual joint) with grout. So: Not to dump on the guy who plans on going 1/32nd...but I'd nix that. Someone who tells me they're going with 1/32nd, I think they're just going to lightly butt the tiles together and get whatever grout penetration they can. And it'll likely be nothing more than topical grout with very little actually packing whatever gap there would be between the tiles. With the new specs, 1/8th inch is the new standard. You could still go 1/16th if the tiles and pattern allow for it, the installer is comfortable with it, and it's called out in the specs...but I'd not advocate going less....See MoreThey sold me a floor model, and didn't tell me!
Comments (10)We have just built a new house...we have had holy heck with BEST BUY. Bought over $16K worth of appliances and were told they had arrived at their warehouse and just tell them when to deliver. Our building got delayed by a month and then when we finally told them to deliver them, they said it would be months before we could get them. We have gotten bits and pieces of our PAID FOR APPLIANCES and now have major issues with an oven that was delivered yesterday. They took it upon themselves to order us an oven that had been on the floor and didn't bother telling us. The oven was delivered yesterday and it's is so beat up that it's totally awful looking. Part of the bottom of the oven is suppose to have a grill and it's not there and the white glass around the door panel is broken and flaking off (great for cooking food, huh?), along with a damaged handle. They didn't tell us it was a floor sample but yet we had already paid the full price (plus $200 to installation). (BTW: They said they had delivered both our kitchen oven/microwave combo and the wall oven in the butler's pantry two weeks ago and we NEVER GOT IT--that is another story). Never again will we purchase anything from BEST BUY....they are liars and cheats. Please be aware that they are NOT very reliable. I am about ready to tell them to come get all the appliances and just give us our money back. (the picture is of the oven door handle)....See Morewhat size grout line for subway tile? and recs for white grout?
Comments (14)If you have tight grout lines, you would be using unsanded grout, which looks whiter than the sanded version of the same color. We recently used TEX XT grout in Bright White--#910 in our bathrooms, and it looks very white. The large format Porcelanosa tile we used in our MB is a very white, very glossy tile, so we wanted a white grout that matched well. The XT is supposed to be more stain resistant (than other grouts?), so hopefully our white grout will be less likely to discolor (since it looks so pretty right now!). It's not necessary to seal it, but you can (with a solvent-based sealer). We sealed ours for added protection/peace-of-mind....See MoreGrout Color/Grout Line Size
Comments (3)Yep, bamboo does not do well in humidity. That is why I don't sell or install it here in central Texas. To get a true color with grout that is mixed with water make sure the installer is using distilled water. Tap water will have minerals within it. It's the minerals in water that rise to the surface of the grout when it is curing that changes the appearance of the grout color. Also, if too much water is used during the mixing stages of the grout, it can dilute the coloring. Another thing that can dilute the coloring is when the installer is cleaning the tile of grout, if too much water is on his sponge he can pull color pigment from the grout discoloring it to a lighter shade. Non rectified tiles, the smallest recommended grout line is 3/16"....See Morebridget helm
