Inspired to start a flow through...Now I have some questions :D
Comments (12)As the worms process the material at the bottom of the bin, it will become mostly castings. When that happens, the worms will move up into the "fresher" food. If your composting chamber is deep enough (it looks like yours is) the bottom few inches in the bin will generally always be pure, or nearly pure castings that the worms are no longer eating. As for the bottom being wetter, that is true with Rubbermaid bins, but in a flowthrough bin, the bottom is exposed to the air, so it may be drier than the bedding above it. It depends on how you manage the moisture in the bin. You don't want the bottom to dry out, since dry castings become hard and difficult to harvest....See MoreWhere do you get your inspiration?
Comments (19)I think that my biggest inspiration for my garden was a neighbor growing up. She had beautiful mixed borders with perennials, flowering trees, and shrubs. However, I was terrified of her since she didn't like kids and would yell at me for even stopping on the sidewalk to look, so I looked from a distance or as we drove by or walking slowly as a came home from school. I also have a friend that I met when I was 10 whose parents also had mixed borders with roses and crabapples and grapes and perennials. I loved their gardens as well. My grandfather, who we visited in the summer, had a rural garden of old-fashioned cottage garden plants - Hydrangeas, poppies, peonies, iris, sweet peas, violas, asparagus, quince, roses, and an apple tree. There were many more, but those are what remain in my memory, and a few remain in my garden from divisions taken after they had both died and the house was up for sale. My folks took us to the Holden Arboretum regularly and we often detoured through a cemetery with beautiful plantings, so much of what I saw trained my eye, even though I grew up in a house of non-gardeners. Now I get a lot of my inspiration from gardens I visit (I love the Open Days sponsored by the Garden Conservancy and other open garden fundraisers), on line from blogs and here on GW, and from eye candy books from the library....See MoreUh-oh...cats get covid
Comments (13)I saw that, and I'm concerned because two of my three cats are outside during the day. The third cat, Peachy, doesn't tolerate them, so it's easiest to handle it this way. The two come in at night, and one of them comes in occasionally when Peachy is hanging out in the attic. If I brought the two indoors permanently I'd have to sequester Peachy upstairs, which would be a royal nuisance. I'm considering it though. One of my in-and-out cats would love being indoors, although I suspect it would take a lot of adjustment for him to be in all the time. The other one can't wait to go back outside in the morning, so that's another story. The two cats mentioned on the news reside in different parts of NY State. I don't know where they are, but we're not far from NYS....See MoreWhy can't gophers get Covid-19?
Comments (201)@KittyNYz6 - I've used a product that's similar with a castor oil base -- it deters moles for a couple of months, but did nothing to deter the gophers. Everything I value is planted in a gopher wire cage. Except one rose that was planted before I knew about cages and is now a massive rose on a slope, so I just pray gophers don't find it. And I have on citrus tree left that's not in a cage. I also learned the hard way that gophers will chew holes in ceramic pots, wood barrels, resin pots, and the thinner stainless steel gopher wire cages. The only thing that works for me is the much more sturdy gopher wire cage for individual plants and the "hardware cloth" (which is like chicken wire but with tiny holes) at the bottom of my raised beds. Good luck!...See Morejupidupi
