How can I prune my fig tree if I have no chill hours

I live in Qatar and the country is tropical the winters reach as low as 54 Degrees Fahrenheit and I grow them in a really thick container so it will be hard to root prune now I am planing to transplant my fig tree in a 20 or 25 gallon container and I can’t root prune my fig tree and the fig tree is already so big and it will take hours to root prune and I can’t even root prune because of the no chilling hours

Even if they don't go completely dormant, I'd think they slow down during the cooler season. That would be the best time to prune it. If you are worried about it weeping and loosing energy, treat the cuts with tree wound dressing. If you are repotting a size up you don't really need to root prune. Couldn't you just put it in the ground? That may be the best solution for where you live.

My ground soil is very poor I know that figs produce fruit even at poor soil but still it is super poor and the container is really thick and I think getting it out of the container JUST for pruning it will be really hard work every year or two

th102 now is not the ideal time to prune your tree. Having said that. It will still leaf out and produce fruit if you prune it now. The longer you wait the more sap will be flowing thought the tree and the tree will lose more of its energy due to losing more sap. Keep in mind that pruning while the tree is no longer dormant will be a shock to the tree. Thus it will likely appear to stop the active growing process for 1-3 weeks. Your fruiting and ripening cycle this season will also likely be delayed/slowed by roughly the same amount of time.

Hi Allenwrench You have to do it at least the year you want the figs. I just counted the leaves on each new branch starting from its branching point and cut the rest of the branch after the sixth leaf (per Herman's suggestion). I did something extra after that but I will wait and see if that works and come back to mention it after a few weeks.

redhairing... I understand how daunting pruning an overgrown fig tree can be. But, you are in luck. There have been a number of recent threads that cover this very topic. Search this forum, and you will see plenty of photos of hard-pruned fig trees. Also, You-Tube has some pruning videos. You will need a good, tree-pruning saw to establish the basic structure of the tree. I would not be too worried about "murdering" this fig tree, as they do with crepe myrtles. But you will have to decide where to make those initial pruning cuts to prevent this. You already know the basics of pruning. If you can, post some photos of the tree, and maybe forum members will suggest places for the pruning cuts. You have plenty of time. Major pruning should be done in the Spring, before tree breaks dormancy. You will also want to do this, gradually, over a number of years. Even if you screw up...and I am sure you will not...the tree will put out so much new wood that you will never know within a few seasons. Figs are one of the few trees that can be drastically pruned back, with few worries. It's done all the time to control rampant growth. Good luck. Frank

My hardy chicago fig has gone through 4 fruiting stages with out a single hour of chill I started it last july as a cutting and in four months it fruited. and fruited in may. It set another fruiting in early august and is now fruiting in late september. I will be bringing my tree in for the winter in early october. EdibleLandscaping.com carries them for $7 dollar for a 2 inch pot. I started my from a 1.5 inch cutting july 15 2012. This is what it looks like as of 8-14-2013 The tree has produced about 10 figs and has about 6 more on it now. HU,

root pruning is a must when growing in a container as eventually the roots will start to circle and slow strangulation occurs eventually killing the plant.

You can wait until after the ripening crop and watch the leaves for any change as in color or some dropping then wait until soil is fairly dry yet compact enough not to fall apart, tip container to side grab trunk and pull out.

When root pruning you must top the canopy as well otherwise you risk plant dropping figs because to much canopy the pruned root system cannot support and plant will compensate by dropping figs thats mother nature helping its survival.
