This is a very old post but I would just mention that where the OP lives, killing raccoons is illegal and any trapping must be done only with live or Hav-A-Hart traps. And then you have the issue of what to do with the trapped coon........ Electrified fencing is effective and relatively easily done. Friends who lived almost in downtown Seattle - a highly populated urban area - had a small fish pond in their entry courtyard that was decimated by nightly visits from raccoons until they installed an electrified fence around it. Urban dwelling raccoons are highly adaptable and intelligent animals. And with few natural predators aside from cars and the occasional dog. I live in a much more rural area very close to Seattle and raccoon issue are much less of a concern here as the coyotes keep populations in check (as do cars....too many raccoon bodies along the side of the road). I rarely have any issues with raccoons in my garden but the deer are another problem altogether!! And do far more damage than any raccoon!!

If covering is out, then aside from the very expensive (giant fans used by commercial growers) and the very wasteful (spraying water continuously from the time the temp dips below 32 until it recovers again) anything else you try is probably useless. The good news is that "frost" does not necessarily mean no crop. "Hard freeze" is the scarier term (meaning below 28) but even temps in the low 20's can be tolerated for varying amounts of time by different fruit trees at different stages of development. Obviously the farther the plants are along, the more damaging a freeze will be. Google "MSU Fruit Bud Hardiness" to get a better idea about what kind of hope you can cling to⦠Good luck!

I will cover if I ever get fruit. I started mine from cuttings and they have not done anything. I have had figs in the past but the gophers killed them. When I did get fruit, I had more problems with rats and squirrels than I did with birds. I plan on using knee highs to cover my fruit. It worked on the mango (until my dog ate it). I'm hoping I can get something to myself this year if I continue to leave the black raspberries uncovered for the birds.

It seems that you already have a first guess as a Kadota. If else fails, next summer, post some pictures of your ripen fig fruit, showing the skin & pulp colors, and leaf shape. Some fig expert will have some good say on its id. Here is a link that might be useful: Kadota
