I did that in my guest room - no problem at all. The carpet is pretty low pile and the rug is a fairly thick sculpted type oriental. I have no pad under the rug. I also have a very short, dense wool oriental rug on the carpet in my living room. That also works fine. I have all these rugs on carpet because I moved from a house with wood floors to one with more carpet. I hope to get rid of the carpet someday when I feel like moving everything again. So then I will need the rugs and in the meantime I can't stand the plain beige carpet. In another room I have a thick wool runner that covers the width of carpet from the deck door to the wood floor in the dining area. It has no furniture on it that holds it in place so it ripples a bit. I need to find a way to keep it flat.

For starters, true elegance IMO is simple. And I for one understand what OP means by rustic elegance. So: I love white, so I'd go with a creamy white on the walls. I have SW Creamy in a north facing room, and it's warm and soft. Another similar creamy white color, which gets enthusiastic reviews here, is BM Capitol White. I'd get off white linen drapes and an off white rug, maybe with a subtle pattern. Basically various shades of whites with lots of texture. Alternatively, go with a very dark blue wall color and off white drapes, rugs, etc. are there any bedrooms that you like? If yes, can you identify their common elements? Or post them here? Another question: what of this set have you bought/are you planning to get? Everything? Personally, I would not buy the complete set, i.e. get different nightstands, for example.

Your bed is beautiful! I love your paint color and your chair works in this space. I would like to see you remove everything from the walls and all furniture except the bed, chair, dresser and bedside tables. You have the makings for an elegant, tranquil bedroom; the treadmill and the large wall-mounted digital picture frame are intruding upon that. I agree that the TV should be mounted above the dresser, and that your windows should be unobstructed. Additionally, the valences and blonds are contributing to the dated look in this room. Suggestions for you: 1. Using a corner drapery rod, add simple drapes, such as these: 2. Sheets: 3. Coverlet: 4. Pillow shams: 5. Have a bolster made for your bed in a saturated teal velvet, something like this: 6. Bedside lamps: 7. Nothing above the bed. With a TV above the dresser, your eye needs someplace to rest; I think I’d leave the rest of your walls bare (you’ll notice your pretty paint color more that way!) with the exception of one favorite framed piece - maybe the one on the wall between your TV and window. (I can’t tell you where to hand it without views of the other 2 walls)

You may want to start saving inspiration rooms you love; it will really help if you have a direction. I would purchase the rug fist vs bedding and cushions so you have a style to build on. Be sure to use various colors, patterns and textures so it feels more interesting The headboard is high and I think art above each night stand would be more complimentary and use small brass lamps for a modern look. You could add the sign on another wall If you need a bedskirt, a more tailored style would feel more modern Dresser and tv wall - mirror, plant, chair, art, baskets
