Pool Heater dilemma - need reviews/advice please!
Comments (4)Oil fired heaters in the US don't exist anymore. You decision to move away from that fuel is a very good one I suspect. One concern on that front is are you in northern Virginia or Nova Scocia as your references seem a bit non descriptive. I don't know what is in Canada as an available fuel. Generally speaking, oil is replaced with propane. This is usually just as much a budget issue as oil since the two are tied in both manufacturing and pricing. You mentioned tanks, burying, etc..., Here in NJ, I am not allowed to deal with these tanks. I used to get to pass this section on to a buddy of mine I grew up with (which means he's a mensch too!) to pull the tank and oil because subterranean tanks are no longer allowed here. The propane dealer deals with any needed propane storage issue. My dealer (I have propane for my pool) provided a pair of 125 gallon tanks for my 300K heater which gives me about a 30 to 45 day supply after I heat up the pool. They are above ground and withing 120' of the location they need from the truck to refill. As long as the stickers IDing them stays visible, I can paint them or have things growing like ivy if I like. Different areas may have different rules. Asking is the best way I know to finding out those rules. My wife and I don't find they stick out like sore thumbs in my yard but some people may for theirs. As for your situation, a heat pump has limits. If those limits are outside your needs, its use is not really for you. You have read enough and so I don't need to reiterate the a HP may be nice for you for the pool but the spa use will be a different situation. A gas fired heater has so many advantages there. As for which brand, my area has a number of brands available. The ones I like best happen to be Pentair. What is best in your area may be similar or it may rely on what you can get serviced easily and that may be a different brand. I don't recommend a heater be purchased off the net but rather be sized properly and equipped as needed on site and professionally. Unless you are planning to do the install and have the experience needed, you won't save a buck. Scott...See MorePlease help. Newbie to pool/spa automation.
Comments (2)Repair guy is recommending the 8 with the Intelliflo because you'll need the extra circuits to control various pump speeds. The Intelliflo would work well for you with automation because you can program it to run at a low speed for pool filtration, a moderate speed with the booster pump for cleaning and a high speed when you're running the spa. Those 3 speeds/ functions will require 3 circuits. Solar will require another circuit. If you automate your lights that is another circuit, so you can see how easy it is to exceed 4 circuits. I don't think there's a big cost difference between the 4 and 8 anyway. You're going to love automation, controlling everything without having to trek out to the equipment pad is great!...See MoreNew smith pool build-advice please
Comments (5)The big thing that jumps out at me is the fact you want to buy a hayward controller, and salt chlor, and the rest pentair. You wont be able to proberly operate the VS, or the Intellibrites. Lose the PS-8 and get an Easytouch with an IC40 intellichlor SCG. You should have a wired spa side to control jets, and blowers ect, and either a wired or wireless controller for in the house. I see only one main pump. That can work, unless you want to run your spa and have the powerfalls on. I recommend a seperate pump for the waterfeatures. Somebody else correct me if I am wrong, (because I dont use pressure side cleaners) If you have a VS, why cant you have a speed set, and an electric valve to run the pressure side cleaner, and lose the booster pump....See MorePool/spa specs - Please comment! Comments (13)Now that we have the pool, a few things I wish we did differently. 1. Direct pool filler line from water source. (ours is a private well) During the summer, we have evaporation and need to top off the pool. It is a pain dragging the hose. 2. More lights. They gave us one, and wouldn't do LED. I would put more than one make it LED color changing. Would look great at night. 3. Yes, the Pebble tec looks cool. Yes the Pebble tec is rough on the feet. You get used to it, but guests are confused by it. If pebble sheen is smoother, I would go with it. 4. Make the pool deep enough for diving. Even though you may say no diving, kids will. You don't want any terrible accidents. 5.The deck...We did exposed aggregate too. Looks great, a little rough on the feet to get used to, but I think it is the nicest choice for the long run. It will look good forever. BUT, we expanded what they gave us in the contract, and it really could still be bigger. You want to gather around the pool, have enough room for tables, chairs, and chaises. They nickeled and dimed us to death on the measurements for the deck. Make it bigger than you think you will need. 6. Wish we did a spa. Even though we are not spa people, I think guests really like them, and they complete the backyard oasis theme. We did a small waterfall instead. What are you doing for a fence? We have the Jerrith surrounding the pool with 2 gates. We think they built us a nice pool. It was stressful, though. Expect to go overbudget on it. We went over on the electrical, fence, stone, and gravel. We also spent a lot on landscaping, outdoor furniture and outdoor lighting after the pool was done Also, fill it yourself unless you are on very expensive municipal water. Trucked in water was overpriced, but I think they push it so they can just call the pool totally finished quicker. Also, we are happy with the in floor system....See Moresmit2380
