Replace or Repair 8 year old Goodman heatpump?
Comments (11)So far here's what I have for estimates, there are just 2: 1) Rheem 13 SEER 2 ton heatpump model RHSL indoors and 13PJL24A01 outdoors. 10kw back up heater on the indoor unit, Honeywell Digital pro 5000 thermostat. 5 year parts warranty, 1 year labor. $3962 This would NOT qualify for a federal tax credit. I asked about the tax credit, he'd never heard of it, but gave me a price for an RHSL 15 SEER of $5200, and according the Rheem website that one doesn't qualify for the tax credit either. His lack of knowledge of the tax credit makes me nervous (nice guy though). 2) Trane 4TWXS024 2 ton 15 SEER heat pump (XL15i) and 4TEE3F31 2.5 ton variable speed air handler. BACHTR1410 10kw heater, Trane 7 day touch screen programmable thermostat. 10 year parts and labor warranty. $100 rebate from Trane. Total cost with the rebate $5625. #2 offers 6 months financing at 0%, but I'm don't think I'd use that. He was familiar with the tax credit and said he provides all the certification and ARI number that I need for it. I'm tempted to just go with #2. Do you think that sounds good, or should I get another estimate?...See More5yo Kenmore FL - repair or replace?
Comments (23)You're right; the sales were very good this weekend. That definitely worked in our favor. So, the funny thing is - we tried another load (my husband wondered if it would repeat) and, well, the problem was gone. No sounds, the drum is fine (it's not wiggling), and the load ran great... we can't figure it out. In fact, we've done about 5 loads this weekend - the sound hasn't been replicated. Fortunately (for me), I'd already gone out and purchased the replacement. I chose the LG front-loading steam washer (non-stackable), model # WM0742HWA, which was marked down at my Home Depot to $899 (for the white color; it's $300 more on the website), and the matching dryer, model # DLG0452W. With the lower prices, extra 10% off of both, plus $50 off for a new account (whatever - we can pay it off when the bill comes), their incentives ($75 HD gift card, $35 off for the Energy Star rated washer, and free delivery, and plus tax and the gas dryer kit, I paid about $1577 for both. I'd have loved to have the color machines, but I'm going to paint the laundry room instead. ;) We figure even though the older one is apparently working after all, it may just be a matter of time before it fails again. Likely, we'll freecycle it with the caveat that we just don't know how much longer it will last. Comments (9)I'd probably replace it too depending on how much the repair would cost. But I will say that we have a 1997 basic Kenmore/Whirlpool top freezer that we intended to replace when we remodeled our kitchen three years ago. We kept it because we couldn't make up our minds on which new model to get (and wanted to postpone the cost--turned out to be the perfect decision, because the almost-what-we-wanted model we were planning to buy was just updated this summer to be exactly-what-we-wanted!) That thing is still going strong, and we used a Kill-o-Watt to measure its energy use and were surprised to see that it is actually competitive with what we'd be replacing it with (though we will be going to a slightly larger refrigerator, which accounts for some of that difference). So that's just to say--you might well get a number of years out of it yet if it's a cheap fix, and it might not be the energy hog you think it is, depending on the model. (You can actually look this up for many models in the link below; most refrigerators will also become less efficient as they age, though surprisingly our readings were on par with the original readings for our model.) It may be worth at least getting an estimate on the repair. Here is a link that might be useful: Energy Use by Model...See More10 year old thermador downdraft vent--repair or replace?
Comments (15)I had the same problem in a 10+ year old unit. Had a Dr. Appliance person come out 3 times. Then found another fellow who specializes in thermador, subzero, Bosch repair who finally fixed the root problem. It needed to get the motor changed. In our case it was just one side that wasn’t working but I got both sides done. That was maybe 5 years ago and no problem since. I had been close to replacing the entire unit but he said that the unit is good one and should keep it....See Morekudzu9
