10 year old thermador downdraft vent--repair or replace?

I have a vent unit that is now failing..it rises from the center island ...but now no longer does. It was installed in 2003.

An appliance repair company thought it was fixable, but warned me that it could take many hours to remove and diagnose. Parts appear to be available.

A new unit is approximately $1200, with an additional $800 for motor.

is it foolhardy to repair this unit?

I am not sure if cutout is the same for new Thermador units or if it fits other brands..but will attempt to find out

hi, I know this is an old thread, but did you end up replacing your vent or trying to fix? I have the same problem with a Thermador, but my vent is stuck in the up position. Still vents fine, but it can’t move back down. I’ve had a repair person come twice and it will move up and down for a while, then stop again. I also can’t replace with an overhead.

Kick it to the curb and get an overhead. You'll have much better venting.

I am sure that an overhead would be better...but not possible or practical with my kitchen..need to stay with a downdraft

I have a Thermador pop-up on a Thermador range. It works surprising well, suction wise, but it does do the awful thing of pulling the gas flame like crazy. The back burners are almost useless when the thing is on, but then when you use the front burners, they are too far away to capture the smoke/odors/grease/whatever very well. I think it helps avoid setting the smoke alarm off sometimes, but that's about it. The other problem we have had is that the arm mechanism on the Thermador broke, and they apparently stopped making replacement parts for it (even though it is only eight years old). So now I can't get it fixed. That means it is stuck in a permanent up position!! Terribly annoying.

My Thermador cooktop is 30 years old and it is time to repace it. It was CV 2236 with the built in telescopic downward draft ventilation system. I've checked around and it seems that GE might make a comparable model: PVB98STSS (downdraft system) & PP962SMSS (cooktop). Can anyone advise me if I can swap out Thermador for the GE?

I have a 6 burner Thermador gas cook top bought in 2004. The only problem I have with it is that the independent spark re-igniter module is slowly going and only supplies spark to 4 of the 6 burners. If i could get a 6 point igniter for it I am sure it would work for another 10 years. It will still ignite with a cheap hand held igniter, a little bit of a pain though lighting it that way. The part I need is a 00189010, it could even be a used one that works. Tried to source it everywhere and cannot seem to find one.

We met with appliance dealer and decided to pay for an installer pre- visit to make sure it all can work before we move ahead. We've chosen a 36" Cattura down-draft which will be about $2700 installed assuming there are no problems. This is a lot to spend on a marginal improvement, but a hood and vent is not possible. After the visit, I'll make a decision Thanks to all for their input

I know this is an older post but I have the exact same problem. It's over 10 years old and stuck in the up position.

After I wrote the original post, I had mine repaired and have gotten another 5 years of use, so it was a good decision. I'm now planning to replace it for other reasons, and found the cost of a new top grade unit astonishingly high, so I'm glad I waited

Our Thermador downdraft is also stuck in the up position but the fan still works. It came with the old 30" drop-in range that is still in operation...we've had the combo for over 20 years.

We've been trying to replace both and have a Zephyr downdraft on order, but are now wondering if we can keep the range.

Does anyone know if we can put the Thermador RDDS30V back in place after the Zephyr is installed?

JWats612 - when you had it fixed do you know what the problem was? We are having the same issue, stuck in the up position, but the vent is working. Would like to get it back down though!

I had the same problem in a 10+ year old unit. Had a Dr. Appliance person come out 3 times. Then found another fellow who specializes in thermador, subzero, Bosch repair who finally fixed the root problem. It needed to get the motor changed. In our case it was just one side that wasn’t working but I got both sides done. That was maybe 5 years ago and no problem since. I had been close to replacing the entire unit but he said that the unit is good one and should keep it.

I am working on this problem now: Thermador stuck in the up position. On my unit, a thin metal bar has bent connecting the slide bar to the lever, preventing the lever attached to the motor from continuing its travel. Still disassembling the unit to see if I can fix. If anyone has done this, please help!

Just found this thread. My thermador is older and no manual left with it. How do you remove the vent to clean it?

We are having the same issue and our model number is UCVM36FS. We see that the motor is available for purchase but are unable to find anyone to work on it. Does anyone know how to remove and replace the motor?
