Flooring Design Dilemma

Help transitioning- great rm wood floor-to porcelain plank in Kitchen

I had a flood and my wood floor in kitchen is buckling. I'm trying to carry the same look through again with a look alike porcelain plank tile. This is not going to be easy. Please help me with ideas. I can't afford to replace the whole area. I guess I need some sort of transition. ???

Most Houzz contributors would advise to repair the wood flooring and keep it consistent. Wood-look porcelain tile never looks quite right up next to real wood. If you do tile, I'd go with a completely different design like a marble look-alike or something of that nature. Schluter has a lot of transition strips that would make the changeover a breeze. However, if you haven't consulted with a flooring expert, you might do that, as there are some things that could be done to salvage your existing flooring.

thank you, I have decided that the wood was not a good choice for my kitchen in case of a future flood accident. I agree and wanted to carry the wood throughout. I did put a really nice stone tile that butts up the wood floor in the laundry room. It blends beautifully, but it is discontinued... I think my best bet will be to find something similar and a transition piece to carry the color around. Unfortunately, I'll have to also pull up the laundry room floor as well so I don't have 2 different tiles next to each other. I wanted to keep it with dark browns because I want to make my cabinets white and I like the contrast. But do not like a light tile next to my dark brown wood. I have not yet spoken to a tile store expert. I will have to venture out and do my homework. thank you very much for your reply. Angel

The original kitchen had linoleum, and while planning our reno we debated between hardwood, laminate or porcelain tile. I hate having hot feet, so radiant heating has never been a consideration. I live in southwest British Columbia, so it doesn't get too cold, and our forced air ducting runs in the crawlspace beneath the kitchen, so the floors don't get that cold regardless.. Anyways, hubby, the kids love the ice machine in our fridge, and they are always dropping crushed ice. The kids are always having spills and the floor almost always has at least a drip of water here or there. It's a well used kitchen! Because of my concern about water, we ended up installing porcelain tiles. I have always been aware that I should wear shoes in the house because I have a mild foot deformity that is at risk of worsening without appropriate support, but I've always gone barefoot in my home. The tile changed that, my feet become painful if I don't wear my house slides if I'm spending the day baking, but I suppose it's a good thing for me to support my feet. Hubby has dealt with plantar fasciitis prior to changing the floor, so he always wears house shoes as well. We haven't noticed any pain in our hips or knees, but we are still quite young, and I'm sure wearing shoes helps with our alignment. Right after we installed our dishwasher on the new flooring, there was a big leak, and I'm glad I went with the tile! It's easy clean, I don't stress about the kids sliding their chairs and stools across it, and it's an attractive tile. I prefer the warmth of wood, but I know for our family, tile was the best choice, and we are willing to wear house shoes. I've brought wood into the kitchen in different ways, with the stools, utensil "pots", cutting boards, etc.. There will always be pros and cons, you just need to decide which has the least cons and the best pros for your situation :). Also, when you are considering cost, find out if you need to install subfloor. We ended up having to install ditra, which definitely added to the cost. Good luck making your decision.

As Jan mentions above, it depends on what the flooring is in the adjacent rooms that will abut the kitchen floor. If it's hardwood, don't do it. But if it's carpeting or some other non-wood floor, go for it. I have clients who installed wood look tile in their kitchen and they love it. Looks great, super durable.

I have vinyl plank with huge dogs in my walk out basement where they have free access to a large dog run it has been in for 11 yrs and still looks awesome. We have a laminate on our main floor that looks like slate and has also stood up to the brats for 11 yrs there is no way wood could have handled all that abuse. IMO laminate or vinyl plank in good condition is better than scratched up wood floor that would have to be refinished before sale. We now have a great pyrenees as our 2 old dogs have passed away and he really is rough on floors , no wood could possibly stand up to him.The pic is the laminate floor and the old dogs

@Angel You are certainly entitled to your own preference, but we are going to be using some marble look-alike tile from Porcelanosa called Thassos next to our dark brown engineered wood flooring for a contrast from the kitchen to living areas, and we are pleased with the contrast. They are two completely different materials, so the transition seems to work. We are using natural wood cabinetry, though, so I can see your wanting some contrast with the kitchen if you are doing a white scheme. Keep in mind that the white trend for cabinetry is past its peak. If you'll review current interior publications and reports from the annual KBIS show where trends are forecast and displayed, you'll see that kitchen design for the past couple of years has been moving toward natural wood looks and more rich and moody colorations. White is certainly still considered a classic, just not at the forefront of trends anymore.
