Should I add shutters? Paint shakes and siding different colors?
We are re-painting our house this summer and I would like other opinions on 1) adding shutters to some front windows and 2) painting the shakes a different color than the siding (or is that a trend that is on its way out?). Thanks.

Comments (11)Sounds like everyone would take the shutters off. We really like the charm that shutters create. We also want a white painted house. If we take off all the shutters the house would look white and boring? You can't see the roof because the house is on a slope so there won't even be a contrast with the roof. The house was built in the 1930's and originally had shutters on it. I think the original owners put new larger windows in above the garage and thus were left with little room to have shutters on both sides. I'm trying to also envision something over the main doorway but I'm not sure how to integrate it as there is a stairway to the landing and a porch. How would it integrate into our low roof line? Comments (7)All of the siding should be the same color. Don't paint your house the same color as the neighbor's house. There is a new development not far from my house. Each and every house is gray. Various shades of gray siding, gray rock, gray brick, gray driveways, gray roofs which all blend away into gray skies that can descend upon this part of the world for weeks at a time. 3 years agoMost of your windows are too wide for shutters. Here is a house with too narrow shutters on double windows. As to paint, I like the drama of contrasts.

3 years agoOnly the two windows above the porch on the left are suitable for shutters, so you don't need them. I'd paint it charcoal, blue or gray green and wait about the shakes. They might be OK or you might want to change them. Cedar shakes look great with charcoal and blue, and the bottom ones are cedar too, but colored not stained.

3 years agoI just recommended Benjamin Moore's Gray Owl to someone else. A very light gray. Another gray to consider is Storm. (My dining room is painted that color.) Both colors are on this house.
If you did Storm on the majority of your house, you could use Gray Owl were you had been thinking to use white.
BTW, I really like the pale periwinkle your house color has faded to.
