Please help, room feels dark and unfinished.

I would like new stool ideas and lights above the island. The four panels behind the stools needs something? Also, any ideas for above the mantle. I am wondering about a runner in the kitchen, but I am not sure what pattern or color, I seem to gavitate toward dark colors. Would like a fresh perspective. Help!

Can you take pix with all your lights on? That seems like a strange place for a FP with no place for seating and right in a traffic path. Can you convert it to a pizza oven? I would start by removing the dark art installations everywhere; they aren't brightening things at all. Can't really see your upper cabinets, but do you have LEDs under them to light up your counters and range top. As I said, we need to see it with all the lights on.

Drift wood on mantle or led candles. At Michel's they have birch leds so pretty. Add a fake green succulent or plant to the island. At door add a red or burgundy rug.

We have a windowless powder room. We decided to embrace its darkness and painted the walls and ceiling a very dark blue, almost black! The floor is slate that has a similar dark 'slate' blue in it. The granite is almost black with silver and gray flecks and blue 'jewels'. The powder room accents are silver and chrome but I think most drama was added by the sparkle of light from the 'invisible' tiny black spot lights (on a black track) on the ceiling. Its amusing, and gratifying, to hear the excited reactions from first time guests!

The weird part of the layout is the bump out where our daughter's closet is, by the stove. Husband isn't keen on taking that out, so for now it would be a work around. If the one wall comes out (where the "doors" are on the top wall), it will extend that part of the kitchen back out another 3.5-4' by 11'. (the rooms are currently offset, which I couldn't figure out how to show w/the planner so I just went ahead and made it so that wall was eliminated, making the dining area larger. Otherwise it would be like this, and not have a peninsula. There's nothing else I can think that could be changed to do w/the layout and traffic, so if you guys see something, feel free to point it out! The door on the left is the basement, that can't go anywhere, and the door on the right is an open doorway that goes to the living room, so that can't go anywhere. The door on the bottom wall is the patio door to the outside.

ci_lantro, thanks sooo much for your advice. I think you are exactly right. It feels like a ledge, like I could wrap my fingers around the back of that crown tile at the top and just pull the whole thing down (if i had superhuman strength of course.. lol). It's a pretty big gap, probably 3/4 to 1 inch in width (between the top edge of the crown tile and the wall). Would I need to fill it with backer rod or anything before I attempt caulking such a huge space? They finished & caulked the sides but I wasn't sure if I needed to do the same thing at the top because of the way water might collect there from condensation on the wall or ceiling. Wasn't sure if I would need the same materials. I would love to tile all the way to the ceiling. It would look so much better and be easier to keep clean. I will have to ask the prev owner if they know what tile was used.

Without seeing pictures, it's hard to suggest something for your specific situation. In general, I have found that areas of white can bring a lighter feel to a space. You might consider a white slipcover for the couch and other touches of white such as pillows, lampshades, curtains, textured area rug or wall hanging. Hope this helps!

NO FAKE PLANTS IMO a large piece of art with some color on that DR wall then some stools in a color from that art as for the panels you could maybe get some vertical art pieces but I would just leave them behind the more colorful stools. The lighting try changing the bulbs to LEDs in 4000K . I hate runners in kitchens just a tripping hazard IMO. A nice bowl filled with fresh fruit is always a nice addition to a kitchen counter or a nice vase filled with fresh flowers. Fresh flowers are so cheap at the supermarket there is no reason to not have them al the time. The mantle needs some thing low and wide so keep your eyes open for that . Please find a spot for th trash like under the sink. IMO a small trash can under the sink is all the trash you should ever have in the house anyway.

My recommendations would be to look for lighter color counter stools without the back, so the space feels more open. Also, I would recommend adding a mirror to the wall behind the counter chairs. The mirror will bring more light into the kitchen and you can really play with it here, think one fun round mirror on medium to large scale. And you can balance the wall out with stylish wall sconces on each side of the mirror as well. Also, you can add a large art above the fireplace that will set the mood in the area. As far as a rug/ runner goes, if you do have kids and you cook a lot, I would not recommend adding a runner. If you don't, then try to experiment with your style/colors, and see what you like. The runner will add some interest to your kitchen, just chose an easy care rug that can be cleaned and use a non slip pad under it. Hope this helps, good luck!

If use runner, get enough for everyday change. U need 7 or 8 of them. I agree with Amber.
