Wintering in sunroom/summer outside in St. Louis? Can I do this?
Comments (5)Hi Betty Lu, 1. I think they'll be fine as long as they don't freeze. Above 50 is better, and you can put in a small heater if it dips down. Some species are more sensitive to cold, like most aechmeas. Neos are more tolerant of cold. 2. Not necessarily. If a plant puts out nice pups which grow out, then I separate them when they are 1/2 to 2/3 size of the parent, and I will repot the pups in a single pot. As they get bigger, you can of course put them individually in larger pots. I keep the parent plant if it's still alive to make more pups. 3. They are constantly growing, and will flower at different times depending on the species. 4. I keep mine in part shade/bright shade in the warm months. Morning sun is good because it doesn't burn like the afternoon sun. They can make nice groupings under trees or large bushes where there is filtered light. Maybe you can put them out when night temps are above 55F? I'm in N. California and bring the prized plants indoors for the coldest months. Some stay outside under the eaves where it is going to capture some warmth emitting from the house. While they may not be hit by an overhead frost, they are still vulnerable if a persistent freeze comes a long....See MoreSun-room floor, can I paint?
Comments (11)Jane, I was not attempting to discourage you from painting your floor. I just wanted to share what I learned through my own experience, because you had mentioned that you once considered using tile. Also, whoever buys the house might choose a floating floor and the paint wonÂt make a difference. Although I decided not to use paint on my porch/sunroom, I plan to go ahead with painting the plywood floor in the finished basement. Like you, I am contemplating a beachy (or summery) look, especially since I am on the coast. I thought about a distressed white or a gray similar to weathered shingles or weathered wood (ThereÂs so much of it around here). The patterned floors look great and seem like fun. The possibilities are endless. You can use stencils or sponging. You can also paint a faux area rug. This year I donÂt have the time or patience to attempt a pattern, but I am trying to learn decorative painting and maybe soon I can acquire the skills to attempt a pattern. For now, the painted floor is something inexpensive to go under area rugs. IÂm no help with a color scheme, but your wicker serving cart is great and will probably look good no matter what colors you choose. With area rugs, lots of plants and that lovely wicker cart, the floors donÂt have to be noticeable unless the paint looks really good....See MoreKitchen eating area is changing to sunroom!
Comments (16)Lisa- Thanks! I'm really excited about the table. Your kitchen is going to be amazing and a dining room that feel like a sunroom....what a great space! Stephan- That is so nice! My love of CL and thrift store finds is the key to staying on budget (LOL) so vintage is a perfect fit. Rebunky- Yes! Too much for the kitties, there will be no seedlings in sunroom. Especially on the floor...but that table is cute! Love the bunnies...and I think a little Peter Rabbit fabric and maybe a few planters may find their way into the remodel. Nothing too much, but just a little whimsy :) I don't know if I mentioned this (long week) but my SIL and her husband have very graciously donated their old cabinets for our kitchen remodel. They're white (which I like) but our uppers are wood....so we may be painting the uppers. My mom is ecstatic! So, I guess it's a good call, but we are keeping the wood trim and some detailing and will probably use the vinyl "wood" floor planks or tiles. (Shhhhh....don't tell Fori.) LOL But we will still have lots of colors, fabric and overall fun in the finished kitchen. And the dresser will have an even better location! More to come, later...I have to redo my little floor plan, but now it's back to gardening!...See MoreIdeas for sunroom windows
Comments (9)Without knowing budget and dimensions a few things come to mind. 1. Bifold patio doors. These will probably run you at least 10K for a multi panel setup. Dont forget to budget in for a screen 2. French style patio doors with sidelights. You can have the sidelights be the same width as the door. If you have a 12 foot opening then the two center doors open and fold back to back with the sidelights. Again dont forget to budget for the screen. 3. Multi panel sliding doors. Im no expert but my dining area does open to my patio so i have a bit of experience with this. I ended up enlarging an window and adding a set of french doors with a side light. Mine is only 3 panels each 36" wide. It looks like 3 doors. My screen slided across covering the two doors. A few other things to consider. If you do put a door in that area will it now become a pathway? If it does are you okay with having a wood floor and people coming in/out with their shoes on? Thats what happened in my case and i wish i would have put a more scratch resistant material down. At the very least plan for a rug as large as the opening....See MoreRelated Professionals
