IMO, the cabs and furniture need to coordinate, but not necessarily match. For example, we have white perimeter cabinets in the kitchen with merlot colored hood & island. Kitchen is open to family room with 2 built-ins in a slightly off white color. Cubbies are just around the corner from kitchen and can be seen through the doorway--they are also slightly off white. There is enough distance between the whites that you don't notice they don't match--they just coordinate. Our master bedroom furniture has a mahogany finish with antiqued gold pulls, the master bath has espresso vanities with antique pewter pulls and you can see from one room into the other. Again, they are just far enough apart that you really don't notice the difference & they coordinate. Stained furniture can be coordinated with painted vanities/cabinets & vice versa. Unless you're planning something totally outlandish, I think you'll be just fine. Hope this helps!

Wow, I really appreciate the speedy responses here! I am so glad my husband and I are not the only ones who think having the first floor guest room on the same side of the house as the master is not nuts!! The realtors in this market (Dallas and suburbs) are so adamant about these being totally separated. But I agree that this is a benefit when it comes to resale if someone wants a nursery close to their master. I feel like printing out all your comments and showing them to my builder and architect because I just know they will throw a hissy fit when I mention we want to move the guest bedroom. We definitely will put the guest bedroom's closet and bath, and the master bath and closet in between the master and guest rooms to provide buffering and privacy. Actually, my husband plans on using the room as an exercise room anyway (we have no kids) so it will be better for him to have it close to the master. IF anyone else wants to chime in with an opinion or idea to make this work, please do so! Thanks!

This must be a common dilemma. Our master bathroom has china black marble with carrara marble base cap. The walls are painted RL silver candle lite which is a pearl like silver. The cabinets are stained wood as is the window so there's a bit of warmth in the room. The master bedroom is going to be done in jewel tones with a RL gold candle lite ceiling. To help bring cold and warm together I used jewel tone towels in the bathroom.

In my last home my entire family room and kitchen were painted SW CG and my master bathroom was SW SS. BOTH looked very blue in that space. In my new home I had a bedroom done SWSS. In this space it looks very GREEN. Its a beautiful color but I had thought it would be more blue. These two colors are very much affected by light and by yellow light. It completely changes them. I did the master bath in this home in SW Tradewind and I love it! There are so many colors of similar character to go with. A really really pretty color is VALSPAR SEA SALT BLUE. I think you need to make sample boards and try them out and decide of you want more blue more green or more gray. Excuse the paper shades on the window but this is the Tradewind in my new bath.
