Comments (26)I am sorry if I insulted someone. I can be abrupt, but how is showing someone that a process is futile an insult? How can pointing out why someone is wrong insult them? Discussion of mold and high heat and humidity are really OT. So are mealtime customs. Since you brought them up, however, I have lived in the Sonoran desert and the humid Gulf South. In addition, I enjoyed dessert in both places. The Sonora Alta is a relatively rainy place for somewhere defined as a desert. Despite the semiannual rainy seasons, humidity-related mold and problems are rare. I know how mold grows, as well as other things grow, at a much deeper level than you can probably imagine. If you want to catch up, plan on taking classes, or hitting the library very hard for a decade or so. For the OP, it is a byproduct as the stated aim is to COOL the house by evaporating water from buckets. I believe that I have already shown that the decrease in temperature is not likely to be significant. I, personally, would be interested in any demonstration that you might make indicating that a few buckets of water will significantly increase the humidity in the Phoenix home. I would sometimes turn the shower on and plug the tub drain when I came home in the evening and started the forced-air heat. That was effective in increasing the humidity inside of that small house. My little portable ultrasonic humidifier could never catch up if I did not do that. Any modern residential air conditioning system in good condition is not going to be harmed by turning the thermostat on and letting it run. If you have a different view, please explain your reasons in detail. As for the cost of running AC continuously vs. intermittently, you statement makes no sense as written. Maybe you can explain what you mean. Purging the home with outdoor air using fans or blowers makes sense. Sure, running the AC a little at time will cost less, but the indoor temp will be high in the day time. In that climate, night temperatures are often pleasant enough to open the windows although in urban areas that is may not be true. Do you expect the OP to come home in September and only run the AC a couple of hours a day until November? Prove me wrong, by facts or logic, and I will concede the argument. Hand-waving opinions are not sufficient. Thinking outside of the box is how a lot of so-called common sense is debunked. That is my usual approach. The antonym of warp, btw, is not drying out. Comments (13)Here's what happened to me: Last Sunday morning, it got really cold, so, for the first time this year, I turned my heat on. Not fifteen minutes had passed before I smelled this AWFUL smell, like burning hair, and my smoke alarm went off. :-( Now, to explain a bit, I live in a fairly new trailer, which I got in June 2014, and, all last winter, I didn't have any trouble with rats or mice. But, for a few weeks prior to turning the heat on, I had been hearing sounds like mice or rats scratching around in the ductwork. Still, I didn't really worry about it, since I had had mice in the ductwork of my old trailer, which I had from 1993-2014 every single winter, and none of them had ever caught fire. They would just run around like crazy, when it would first kick on, and then, I would assume, they simply got the hell out of Dodge, and waited for it to kick off again, before they would get back up in there. Whenever I would actually see them INSIDE the trailer, I would set traps for them, and dispose of them, of course. But, as for them being up in the ductwork, I just figured "Out of sight, out of mind", and didn't really worry about it. I had heard quite a bit about mice and rats chewing on the electrical wires inside the walls of trailers, and causing them to catch fire in the winter, when the heat would kick on. So, needless to say, when that one caught fire, it scared the hell out of me, and I immediately turned the heat off, not wanting to run the risk of my trailer burning down, particularly with me in it. ;-( So, yesterday, I put some poison traps down under the trailer, but, the whole time, I kept thinking: "What if they eat this and crawl off back into the ductwork and die?" "How will I ever get them out then?" :-/ I realize now that it was the wrong thing to do, and will take them out, and use snap traps in the vents instead. But I guess I was just wondering whether anybody else had had the same experience, with one actually catching fire like that, and the smoke alarm going off? You'd think mice would have better sense than to just hang around and let themselves get singed like that, unless it was actually STUCK in there and COULDN'T get out? That's the possibility that worries the hell out of me. :-( Do they ever go up there and then get stuck?...See MoreAprilaire Air Purifiers
Comments (14)This is likely referring to static pressure at various fan speeds. But there's more to it than just 'static pressure'. The MERV rating or efficiency of the filter is rated at 1200 CFM. The MERV performance drops at higher fan speeds. (what are you putting the filter in for? ) As the filter gets dirty, this will only decrease (efficiency of) particle removal from air. What's the MERV rating of the Aprilaire 2000 series air cleaners? (from website) It is MERV 13 at 1,200 cfm, which means it will remove 76% of virus size particles 0.3-1 microns, 90% of dust particles 1-3 microns and 90% of pollen and mold spores 3-10 micron. But that really doesn’t tell the whole story. A MERV number is only a reflection of the initial efficiency of the air cleaner and doesn’t tell you a thing about its efficiency over time - how it will perform a month, six months or even a year after installation. A balanced look at whole-house air cleaners looks at initial efficiency, efficiency over time, service life (how long between servicing), service actions (how hard it is to service it), the up-front cost and the maintenance costs. The 2000 Series is designed to have low restriction to airflow and large surface area which allows it to last for an entire year in most applications. The patented Self-Seal media provides a very tight seal to prevent unfiltered air from bypassing the filter. The only maintenance is replacing the media which is quick and easy to do. ------------- The idea behind adding a second filter is to increase performance of the filter and keep static pressure as low as possible. If you're trying to evade cost it's not likely you will have the success you are looking for. With that said, everyone is different in how they suffer from allergies and air borne irritants in the home....See Morejaxo
