what to do when air from one duct is cooler than another
Comments (7)Just a quick note, although the thermometers are the same, did you check them against each other? There could be a plus or minus difference for each thermometer, compared to a 'standard', such as ice in water or boiling water. If they read the same: no problem. By not knowing any actual error, they (errors) could be additive, giving you a false result. V...See Morewhat to do with air duct framed above window at sink.
Comments (4)Thanks so much for taking time out to help and for reading such a wordy post! I'll try to get a photo posted. This is a 2 story dutch colonial house. This is a supplied air duct that is metal and is 10 inches in height. It ENDS in the shared wall to the dining room! The register in the kitchen in centered over the window which is over the sink base. I believe this is attic space above both rooms and I think I can read your mind already if you are thinking about relocating the duct? Don't know if DH is up to that project! I've thought about using 12 inch wide accent cabinets on left and right wall ending with a faux door in the corner. The reason being that dust is a huge problem and I don't want to leave top of cabinets bare to ceiling. The other option is to go with bead board with crown molding? But still leaves the issue with building a decorative framing around the duct and maybe using a trio type pendant lights that come mounted on a ceiling plate to mount underneath the duct framework. This stupid duct is an issue in the living room where it ends center of wall! What a joke! Thanks!...See MoreDoes air duct cleaning help with dust?
Comments (6)Excessive dust? dust doesn't come from the HVAC system, it's due to outside influences that cause the dust. Dust is in the air we breathe indoors or out, pet dander, smokers ash, skin dander etc. You remember the commercials Intel made many years ago where they showed the funny little different colored suits? The people in them covered from head to toe? Humans create dust. To eliminate dust entirely you have to go to extremes you can not imagine. The best way for homeowner's to cut down on dust is eliminate the house from being under a negative pressure. Realize I said "cut down" on dust. If the house is under positive air pressure 'most of the time' there is a pressure that is preventing infiltration, this will in turn cut down on the amount of dust. Cleaning your duct system is merely treating the symptom of a dirty home, it will just get dirty again....See MoreHelp! I'm allergic to the air duct system!
Comments (20)sktn77a: magic 8 ball says 'I am only good at guessing, I am not there.' A couple of things: The drywall should be marked somewhere, but you may have to remove it from the wall to find it. Another option would be to check with home depot to see if they ever bought any Chinese drywall during the time in which you bought it. System draws air: The return draws air from where ever it can when the unit cycles on. This is more common when the return is undersized, the blower acts as a vacuum pulling air thru cracks and crevices in the return. Because you're in a townhome it maybe being pulled from a neighbor. This depends on many things, how the air return was designed for the home among other things. In older homes it is fairly common that builders built chase returns and sealing them was rarely done back in the day. Supply plenums are typically insulated on the inside of the plenum. That insulation can become very nasty and home to countless allergens. If that is the case I doubt cleaning it would do much. You would have to open it up and inspect it. If it is insulated and aged, the stuff will just crumble in your hands... enough to gag a maggot....See More- 18 years ago
