My son 6yo wants wants wants the BOMBAY KIDS loft bed but I can't imagine spending nearly 1K on anything that can't carry him into college and beyond. He has the LOUVERED bed (also by Bombay) which I bought on clearance for 150$ (and still regretted every pennies!). Some furniture develops 'patina' with use, these things just look bad when it's scratched. Especially on the chestnut finish, every scratches and ding make the bed look really shabby!! Recently I went to the showroom and just by checking the quality of the floor's model, I know these furnitures won't stand the test of time. The desk and dresser on the floor are already falling apart!!! I'm planning to replace his bombay's bed with a better quality solid wood one. Any suggestion??

I wouldn't actually try to match features of the house. He's young and you want this bed to work in any house. I went for a darker wood, not totally black, not light, pretty non period specific and I did do a trundle. I know some day he will have friends over, and his room isn't huge, nor did I want bunks because they would block too much of his wall space (we have murals on the wall). I really like the option we went with, which I think is fairly transitional to any age or decorating style. This is a terrible picture (of both him and the bed) but the best I could find...I think it's similar to a few in the link you provided. The trundle is actually not quite in the pic, but the bedding on it is the white line on the right of the pic (as you're facing it). It slides out quite easily. We actually used it for toys for quite a while as we were getting settled in the new place, but added the trundle finally when we were finished. At 7 you probably need the trundle now :) I wanted something that would work in the theme of this room (1930's safari tent) but also work with his antiques in the future (he has a chest and this amoire next to the bed). Trying to match finishes on wood makes me crazy and to me is too matchy matchy...so I liked this one because it was dark, but not painted dark, and yet not light (I hate blonde wood myself...but that's just me). This bed is pottery barn I think.

I bought my son a daybed when he was ..16 I guess? And he saw it as a huge upgrade and said "oh wow it's so grown up!" I must say though that my son is easy to please, in many instances. It's twin btw He's a thin boy, medium height, now he's 19, and it's good enough for both him and girllfriend when they come for a break from college. The girlfriend is slightly taller than him) (just to add -not that you need that info-that first time her visiting, it was a guest room for a young lady..then the request was put in..then I said she should clear it up with her parents..ok you get the picture-the bed is big and comfortable enough)) With daybed you control the mattress same as with regular bed, which is cool, 'cause frankly I'm very glad I got ours on huge sale, they wanted 1200$ or so for the bed that I with lots of patient waiting was able to buy for 400$-and let me tell you, 400$ reflects its quality more..Or so I think. But it looks good, and holds the mattress, Ours is from West Elm. It doesn't have the trundle so it's normal height We have another daybed with a trundle in a guest room, that one is higher. It's somehow very cool to fall asleep on, (unless one is elderly and it's too high and then I use a trundle if needed) but I wouldn't say it prompts one to use it more like a sofa. While lower daybed does. As for making the bed-all my childhood I would strip the bedding off in the morning, make the sofa bed look like a sofa, and pretty one too (my Grandma had a whole system I had to follow) , then put all the bedding back at night. Both me and my brother's bed . And on school breaks, I had to do the same for rest of sleeping spaces in the house.. We didn't have dedicated bedrooms with beds that looked like beds, so there you go. Matter of minutes, really. I agree that with bunk beds, it's harder. Well to me it's harder-I'm a small woman who doesn't like to climb anymore))

You are on the right track to keep it simple and neutral! I would love to get into my grandsons bedroom and give it a good redo for the older child that he is now. He is 9 and his room still harbors many things that he outgrew years ago. I think that it would give him a new view of his own world to change it around and up date it for the older him. Probably would have if this virus had not changed life so much. My daughter, his mother, just does not see the value in this type of thing and it just dismays me so very much.
