My Beautiful Memory Quilt

Tom's sister-in-law is a master quilter. She offered to make me a quilt out of his shirts, t-shirts, anything that I want to use. As well as any photos, etc.

Earlier this year I took some of his things, Ride for Dad badges, his drum kit, pics of the cats, etc.

I went last weekend (social distancing ensured) to pick it up and I was overwhelmed with the love and work that went into it. It's truly a thing of beauty and our history. It was quite an emotional drive home.

The blue "I'm radiant today" is something that he saw online when he was getting radium intravenously every month. He got it printed onto a t-shirt and got a kick out of wearing it.

While I was there she gave me a great recipe for rhubarb pudding cake that she made out of rhubarb from the freezer. I can't wait to make it when the rhubarb is ready, later this spring.

It's wonderful. My sister made me a lined patchwork jacket from my niece's clothes, so I know how it feels.

It looks like summer chores has priority with everyone right now! I haven't even walked into the sewing room yet. I spent most of the morning stripping pine needles off of the branches of 3 pine trees my husband cut down because the power company came along and butchered them AGAIN. They do this every couple of years and the way they wack the trees up they will never amount to anything and they look just awful. So this is free mulch, just time-consuming. Also walked way out to the corner of the property to the pond, he told me an interesting looking plant was blooming out there, so I had to take the camera out to photograph it. I'm doing an album of all the native plants on our 5 acres. Maybe tomorrow I'll mosey into the sewing room ...maybe not.

Lovely quilt. Deanna: It's okay to mix cottons and blends, just be careful about your temperature on the iron. Poly's tend to slither around, so I don't LIKE using them when quilting, but this is a special circumstance. I wouldn't try mixing the denim with the light fabrics because the different weights of the fabrics won't work well together. I'm not saying it can't be done, just that it becomes very challenging. Donna, you did a great job designing the memorial quilt. I think the shadows really add so much to a tee shirt quilt. I'm sure your friend will cherish the quilt made in memory of his husband. How kind of you.

What an extraordinary, thoughtful, and loving gift : ) Yes, I teared up. I love that it's made with Tom's clothes, and the "I'm radiant today" put a smile on my face... Tom must've had a great outlook and sense of humor! In addition to the obvious emotional value, she's done a lovely job with the colors, and the needlework looks amazing. Where are you going to keep it, Jas?

Oh, my, Jasdip, that's lovely, a work of art. Quilting is an art, I know, and that's put together so well. I hope it keeps you warm and helps you smile, all while it's being beautiful.

That's great! Our former neighbor of 33 years had horseshoe tournaments almost all of those 33 years. We had saved the t-shirts from all, but the first one (the only one known to exist burned in our 2017 fires!) and a couple we knew friends had.

We had a quilt made (the lady only charged $125!)

We were unable to attend the final tournament because we were in Europe, but were able to sneak it over to his new wife so she could surprise him with it at the tournament! We also provided sharpie markers so many long time friends could make comments on the back.

That's beautiful. One of my employees lost her husband recently. He wore Hawaiian shirts a lot and her friend made a quilt and pillow out of them. What a nice thing.

That brought tears. A friend made me one from my Mom's clothes and leftover fabrics. That is such a special thing and labor of love. You are lucky to have such good family to support you. Thank you for sharing it. Again, so sorry for your loss. Hope this brings you good comfort. The details and color/design are amazing!
