My Beautiful Memory Quilt

Tom's sister-in-law is a master quilter. She offered to make me a quilt out of his shirts, t-shirts, anything that I want to use. As well as any photos, etc.

Earlier this year I took some of his things, Ride for Dad badges, his drum kit, pics of the cats, etc.

I went last weekend (social distancing ensured) to pick it up and I was overwhelmed with the love and work that went into it. It's truly a thing of beauty and our history. It was quite an emotional drive home.

The blue "I'm radiant today" is something that he saw online when he was getting radium intravenously every month. He got it printed onto a t-shirt and got a kick out of wearing it.

While I was there she gave me a great recipe for rhubarb pudding cake that she made out of rhubarb from the freezer. I can't wait to make it when the rhubarb is ready, later this spring.

It's wonderful. My sister made me a lined patchwork jacket from my niece's clothes, so I know how it feels.

My Mama passed almost seven years ago, and I am still working on her fabric stash, but with materials used for quilting and also every other type of material one could need. I started quilting about a year before she died, and my first quilt was a Christmas gift for her, I finished in February. I kept company with her as I was quilting and she watched it come together, not knowing it was for her. She had always wanted to make a quilt, and had started the blocks for a Cathedral Windows, inspired by a friend when we lived in Missouri, as state just famous for it's cottage quilt industry. When one drove through the Ozarks, it was commonplace to see them hung out on clotheslines, to catch the eye of passers-by. She had also made some yo-yos but they disappeared sometime and I've never found them. I wish you much enjoyment with your new hobby. I think you'll find yourself close to her spirit as you work, as I find myself close to my mother when I am in my sewing room, handling the fabrics she had saved over the years. I have made about thirty quilts since then, really surprising myself since making ONE quilt was on my bucket list. LOL. Welcome to the forum, and my condolences as well on your mother's passing. BTW, that is one beautiful design you will be finishing. I also have a quilt cat who loves to lay on my blocks and scatter them too. He keeps me company each morning as I sew, and prefers my sewing room to all the others in this house.

Donna, you did a great job designing the memorial quilt. I think the shadows really add so much to a tee shirt quilt. I'm sure your friend will cherish the quilt made in memory of his husband. How kind of you.

Linda OH, I love you and your DD sew together. Donna, sounds like you have a lot going on. Looking forward to seeing your hunter's star. Theresa, yay for the purging! Go, go, go! Linda, That's a lot of blocks to stitch. What size are they? Kate, would love to see a photo of your progress. I have the swoon quilt on my list, but can't quite wrap my head around the instructions. Think I need to pull it out and have a deep think on it. I finally summoned up the courage to stitch together those Kaffe Fassett 6" squares I've had in my stash. I've sewn two packs so far, with one left. I like how they're turning out, though they are in no particular arrangement at the moment. I hope to finish the last pack today. My other sewing plans are to make some skirts. We've had sunny, upper 90s weather here this week, and the humidity is around 78%. After running errands in that yesterday, I desperately need some breezy summer clothing. I don't wear shorts, and pants won't cut it. It's all about the air flow when it gets this hot and humid! ;) Hope everyone gets their intended projects done this weekend! Happy Quilting Weekend, y'all!

What an extraordinary, thoughtful, and loving gift : ) Yes, I teared up. I love that it's made with Tom's clothes, and the "I'm radiant today" put a smile on my face... Tom must've had a great outlook and sense of humor! In addition to the obvious emotional value, she's done a lovely job with the colors, and the needlework looks amazing. Where are you going to keep it, Jas?

Oh, my, Jasdip, that's lovely, a work of art. Quilting is an art, I know, and that's put together so well. I hope it keeps you warm and helps you smile, all while it's being beautiful.

That's great! Our former neighbor of 33 years had horseshoe tournaments almost all of those 33 years. We had saved the t-shirts from all, but the first one (the only one known to exist burned in our 2017 fires!) and a couple we knew friends had.

We had a quilt made (the lady only charged $125!)

We were unable to attend the final tournament because we were in Europe, but were able to sneak it over to his new wife so she could surprise him with it at the tournament! We also provided sharpie markers so many long time friends could make comments on the back.

That's beautiful. One of my employees lost her husband recently. He wore Hawaiian shirts a lot and her friend made a quilt and pillow out of them. What a nice thing.

That brought tears. A friend made me one from my Mom's clothes and leftover fabrics. That is such a special thing and labor of love. You are lucky to have such good family to support you. Thank you for sharing it. Again, so sorry for your loss. Hope this brings you good comfort. The details and color/design are amazing!
