Take sub to small claims court over horrific mess he made?
Comments (14)For most trades it's beneficial to them as well as you to stay as close to the work area as possible to save some steps and keep the project at hand and rolling smooth. Sometimes it can be taken outdoors or in a garage area but for the most part, there are elements that require it to be done in place. This means dusts and debris. A good tradesperson will do a quick, daily clean up getting set up for the next day and at the end of the project, do a respectfully decent clean up of the area concerned. It's common courtesy for the client as well as the trades coming in behind them and shows professionalism. You have to expect a certain amount of mess and not all trades people are going to show respect by picking up after them selves. It's the nature of the beast. You should focus your efforts on working things out with your builder "friend" and not sweat the small stuff such as cleaning up after a sloppy sub. I have a friend who did the most clean finish carpentry work i've seen as far as tight joints, clean cuts, right on detailing, but was the biggest slob as far as cleaning up after himself. Finish carpenters are typically clean, organized trades people, but as in my friends case, not always. Your concern should really dial in on the workmanship of the stairs as that is what you will be living with. The dust will get cleaned up one way or another and is a miniscule concern, imho....See MoreKid Damaged Car...Bogus Items On Estimate
Comments (25)Most automobile insurance property damage deductibles are $500 and up. I was rear-ended last year and the guy who hit me wanted me to submit it to my insurance carrier and have them subro against his carrier. No way, why should I make a claim with my insurance carrier that will raise my rates because I was stopped at a red light and the guy behind me didn't stop? Absolute clear liability. Also, with regard to payment of damages - the person suffering damage does not have to use the compensation $$ to repair the car regardless of whether he owns it outright. The purpose of payment is to compensate the owner of the vehicle for the damages, he isn't obligated to fix it. If the car is leased, it will be up to him at the end of the lease to repair the damage or have the lease company charge him for the damage. Do you have a local body shop that would fairly estimate the damage that was done by the rock thrown by your son? I would ask your neighbor to take it and get an estimate for only the damage caused by your son. Will the guy who saw the whole thing happen attest to the damages your son pointed out? Perhaps enlisting his help with enlightening your neighbor as to what damage your son caused will dash your neighbor's hopes of having all of his body work done on your dime....See MoreHow much is a sports court?
Comments (9)There are tree factors to every construction, sq ft, finishes, quality of finishes. I do not think anyone can tell you exactly what would it cost. The size make a big difference. = Normally to build a some sort of court in the new structure during design is not that expansive, adding to the existing house - high dollar. Real Basketball court is 74 feet long by 42 feet wide. But if you want just three point line 24' is more than enough. (24'x18). So here - Extend basement by 18', rec room 8/9' add 11' wall above. Add concrete wall with the door(s). Here I stole from pinterest so you can see exactly how it is done. But the level of finishes could add to the cost. Built in pool with granite pool liner, with equipment, moisture control, cost a bit more....See MoreBarn/Basketball Court/Outoor Kitchen/Office
Comments (7)We built basically half the structure you’re talking about as a workshop. Without the plumbing. Vaulted only 1/4 of it for the auto lift clearance. 62K in today’s money with us doing all the labor but the excavating and slab pour. A 60x60 square will have a lot of issues with roof size and shape. Square isn’t good. Rectangle is good. A big square will need steel trusses and supports. A 30 x 120 or something rectangular that works within a standard inexpensive wooden truss widths will be a lot less expensive. Planning in a bathroom was something that we really wanted. We were not allowed to connect to the existing septic. Sewer was available, but the whole property would have been forced to connect. That was 40K from a plumber and not allowed to be DIY. (My neighbor had to redo theirs, and it was 35K) So to do half of your projected project would have been 100K here in a low labor cost market with mostly DIY. You are planning on climate control? No wood basketball floors without it. Or woodshop. Ours is insulated well enough to not need a large system, but that too had its costs. Insulation requires a finished drywall surface for fire prevention issues. No HVAC without insulation, or you’re trying to heat the outdoors as my grandmother would say. You are planning on cooking ventilation if the grill is under roof? You’ll asphyxiate without it. We just pull the grill out to the driveway between the house and shop which serves as a patio. I don’t think 100K will be enough to do this. You can plan it in stages though, if you plan it correctly. The big wild card is the plumbing issue. Hire a plumber to consult now about the siting and connecting issues, before you do anything else. If allowed to connect, the existing plumbing could limit where you place the barn. Good luck!...See MoreMark Bischak, Architect
