How to create an entryway w/a drop zone

How do I make/style this entryway?? Every area is connected- the first picture a view of when you walk through the front door. If you keep walking, you walk right into the back of a couch.
Also, We REALLY need a place to drop our crap/shoes when we get home. Should the drop zone be in the main entry from the front door? Or is there a way to put it in the hallway that is just off the main entry/hallway? (second picture)

For me, it's not about the space, it's more about what I can train myself and others to do. You can certainly make the area in the second picture but the only place I see that can happen is if one of those doors is to a closet. If it is, remove the door and make it a drop space.

You have more room in the entry area, but unless you can train every one in your house to utililze some kind of storage unit you put in the hall, all hope is lost. :0(

Where do you drop things right now? Put an official "drop station" exactly where you already drop things. This way you're not changing habits, just the look of it.

Where do you take off your shoes? Where do you plonk your jacket when you take it off? Where do you dump the letters?

I would have hooks for coats on that big wall, boot drop below. A basket for holding mittens, hats, and boot socks...

I have somewhat of a challenge myself, but I'm thinking of solving it with an Ikea rolling cart, letter dump on top, mittens and hats in the middle, trowel and gardening gloves on the bottom.

We used Plain & Fancy cabinetry. We have a mudroom with built in cabinets and a bench adjacent to the kitchen, but we actually ended up with a desk in the kitchen. I needed to have the phone, laptop, and drop area there for convenience. It does get messy but it's better than the mail ending up on the counters. What helps our area is a window at the desk. We do have a built in file cabinet to the left, which is great for keeping track of kids papers, bills, etc. I am very happy with the desk. Honestly, though, I am the only one who sits there. When the kids want to do homework they end up at the island. But at least my island doesn't have mail on it! We have a cabinet beside our clean up sink with 4 recycle bins. I thought it was a silly idea pushed by the contractor, but I have gotten to really appreciate it. For some reason, my family had a difficult time carrying the recyclables out to the garage. But they have no problem pitching them in the special indoor bins. The kitchen table is in the foreground of this desk picture: This is a little further to the right showing how the desk ties into the kitchen. The shelving to the right of the desk holds cookbooks. You can also see a tiny bit of the mudroom/bench area to the left where the backpacks end up: And just to show how it ties into the rest of the kitchen with the island where the kids prefer to spread out their homework, this is just a little further to the right of the desk: Hope this helps. Does the front door open against the wall with the radiator? For the entryway--would picture ledges fit on the wall behind the open door? You could put up 2 or 3 picture ledges and get your gallery wall--with the ability to change out pictures as you like. Or put the gallery wall right behind the open door. Just get a door stop that sticks out far enough to keep the door handle from hitting the art work. As for personal pictures, consider the picture wall a work in progress. Start taking pictures. Ask your parents and your BF's parents for some pictures. IKEA makes a ton of inexpensive frames, and cheap frames are also available at stores like Michael's and Hobby Lobby. I would want some place to drop my keys as I came in. If a table won't work there, what about a wall-mounted shelf or two, possibly over the radiator? Then a shoe-storage unit, or put the shoes in one of the closets. They make really low pile rugs that might fit under your door. I could see a small runner in front of the door, which would help define the space. As for rugs in the dining room, if you are in an apartment with another apartment below you, I'd bet your downstairs neighbors would really appreciate a rug under those chairs. Check on the fiber content of the rug before you buy it, to make sure it is easy to clean. Patterned rugs hide stains better than solid color rugs, which is something else to keep in mind.

Instead of removing the black walnut, you could remove the scruffy, small limbs at the bottom of its canopy and deal with future branches hanging lower as they come, over time. This would allow more light to serve screening plants that can be installed below the walnut. In other words, I don't think you need to get rid of the walnut in order to have a screen. And the walnut's size, because it is limbed up, does not consume much yard space. Screening is going to come best from large shrubs, which do not take all that long to grow, placed in front of the fence. As an example, whatever dark green shrub your neighbor has behind the right corner of your fence would be the type of plant sufficient to screen your view from the deck. Even they could be limbed up into trees to consume less yard space since you have the fence behind them. There are lots of shrubs that get this big and many of them flower spectacularly, or provide some kind of show, such as fall color. You could have all one kind or a mixture as you prefer. If you limb up some or all of them, you are creating an opportunity to put lower shrubs, perennials, annuals, groundcover, etc. below them. This is just an example. You can mix it up any number of ways. But don't make the bed too shallow. It needs to have 6'-8' depth min., not 3' or 4'. Let the bed acknowledge the tree by circling around it, not cutting close to or across it.

Everything is possible, it just takes time and money! What is your builder placing by the green arrow ... water heater, electric panel, etc? That will dictate how easy or hard the changes might be. Take photos of the framing and any wires or pipes that might go through that section, as that will help down the road. You could also pick the GC you want to use to make the changes and have them walk through the house before the sheetrock goes up and they should be able to give you a fairly accurate bid for the job.

I would prefer to keep the entryway clutter-free by simply adding a bench for putting shoes on. You have a nearby closet which can easily be used for storage.

If you prefer to drop your stuff, you can always go this route:

we put a row of hooks by the door, a long shoe rack under, and a basket at the end for gloves, beanies, etc. it's important for us to be able to hang things in the open so they can dry off. I try to make sure only our "current favorites" are on the hooks, otherwise it's difficult to keep it looking uncluttered. off-season items go in the tiny closet nearby.
