Mistake with one-step Poly Stain on table top

Brienne Steve

My first time refinishing something in years and I think I’ve got a mess on my hands.

Currently, my dining room table has a coat of Varathane Poly Stain in “Kona” and it literally looks like a flat brown paint. It’s awful.

How I got here: table has a patterned veneer with glossy polyurethane finish. I lightly sanded with 220 and cleaned up with vacuum and mineral spirits. Applied the Varathane.

Can I sand off the new Varathane finish to the original poly finish (that I only scuffed beforehand)? Then apply a clear poly finish to bring back the original table? There are a few spots where the veneer pattern is coming thru the Varathane finish - I’m assuming it’s an adhesion issue from not sanding/prepping enough.

Please help!
