Comments (8)You could plant pachysandra around the base of your dogwood to keep you from having to mulch that much. The non-native pachysandra is a rather aggressive groundcover that would, in my opinion, compete for moisture with the dogwood (perhaps already showing signs of stress). The area is already in a severe drought with watering restrictions. I think a decent layer of mulch around the trees is the better option. Really, having to keep up mulch in this area is just a necessity; the area is warm and gets ample rain (when we're not in a drought) - causing most mulches to break down (enriching the soil in the process) on an annual basis. Don't think you can "save yourself" from occasionally refreshing the mulch. Is there a way can I avoid planting grass? Like Xeriscaping that will be low in maintenance, but as attractive as grass? Grass, when properly planted (the right time of year) and adequately watered the first year can be rather low maintenance. Zoysia is a very durable and drought tolerant warm season grass (so it turns brown in the winter - meaning no mowing in the winter!) and could be considered. That said, I don't recommend that you cover the area with grass - perhaps just a large oval of grass in the most open area, surrounded by mulched trees and generous beds of hardy shrubs and annual color....See MorePaint Color Help! Comments (22)I, too, am questioning your reason for brown window treatments. However, I do LOVE your idea of doing a red in the kitchen - but maybe just try it first along the cabinets and behind the sink. BTW, me thinks the reason your painter is trying to discourage you is because he thinks it will be a lot of work. I've learned by reading here, to tell him to start with a gray primer first, then the red. BUT - not a deep wine red. More of a fun red! See that one way over there by the knives? (A bigger swatch or picture would help). And that door - I'm sure that must lead to your deck, correct? And that pillar - could you put shelves between it and the wall - thereby still leaving an open air=y feeling but making it useful - think accessories, cookbooks, plants - whatever those little fingers from the highchair can't ruin! Don't be afraid of the red. I have a friend who painted her kitchen red - all along the back wall - tho, she has white cabinetry - in her condo and it's been 3 years and she still loves it. Remember - it's just paint. More important, I'd like you to re-think the brown drapes - and think something patterned with the tan, green, and whatever red you choose....See MoreHelp me decide what color stone veneer to go across the bottom?
Comments (10)I see stone under the porch is that where you are planning it? I need more info and you need to show us your house IMO stone veneer is best when made to look like it is part of the overall construction so all around the house or not at all and IMO this style of house is best left with no stone look at the bottom if you mean at the bottom of the house under the windows...See MoreCan you help pick out shutter style/color and front door color
Comments (8)absolutely no shutters. Why muddle up the look of the exterior when he already has 2 siding colors, with 2 diff siding materials, brick, white trim and a charcoal/greenish roof? here. does this look good? (give me a pic straight on and I'll photoshop something better, but it still won't look good! for the front door, He might try looking for a deep olive green with some bronze undertones Like this color on the left replacing the bright bench w/a wood verision, and getting some numbers clearly displayed. you'll have to enlarge this to see everything He could always paint that white one, add some colorful outdoor pillows. I also like all of these wood and copper accents, along w/these paint colors, address plaque, and even a slight limewash on the brick I know you said he doesn't want to paint. but a very light limewash w/Romabio would give this similar effect. (AND, if will completely wash off within 72 hours if he doesn't like it. there is no upkeep w/this, it's natural liime and will patina w/time. Just a suggestion) could also go darker w/the Urbane Bronze, Iron Ore, or one of those dark bronze/black tones Or, maybe you want to go w/a brick color front door. maybe a door w/some lites in them rather than solid this door style might be nice. you could even have smaller glass panels....See More- 4 years agolast modified: 4 years ago
