Preventing green corrosion on textured thin sheet brass
Comments (6)Sorry, I guess I was not clear. The brass is sections of thin stamped sheet wrapped around a wooden framework and nailed in place. The mirror itself is regular glass mirror. I will take a picture tomorrow. There was an antiqued dark brown patina in the lowest parts of the design. Since it is not an antique, this is done with patina chemicals. I think there was a thin and incomplete coat of varnish or lacquer on it, which was why it was so hard to clean. On the parts where I had to scrub really hard to remove the green crusty corrosion or the red or brown discoloration under that, all this brown patina was removed. After cleaning, washing, and drying, I applied NEW patina chemical from a bottle. I keep this for my copper sculptures. I have only made things from new metal and have never had to deal with corrosion like this before. I have cleaned some of my old thrift store tarnished copper/brass stamped plates before, and when the discoloration was gone it stayed gone (then I lacquered them). But I have never before had to deal with corrosion that popped up again right after cleaning....See MoreCoordinating aged brass hardware/faucet?
Comments (8)Thank you for these replies! palimpsest-I was also thinking tone wise that the burnished antique might be best as well. I'm in Portland so am fortunate to see actual fixtures at the store. My concern is there's something that looks a bit more... artificial? modern? to me sometimes in that finish? Was wondering if maybe it would look more authentic to age some unlacquered brass or just go for the ORB? warmfridge, I'm sure it's frustrating trying to find the perfect match and I can already see growing a little collection myself looking for "best!" Thank you for another vote for the burnished antique. I did wonder if ORB would just look black when placed in close proximity throughout the kitchen. judeny, I will check into the hardware options you mentioned, thank you! I'm esp. interested in the fact you still used satin stainless faucets. That might be a very good compromise. Perhaps have the ceiling fixtures and hardware on the kitchen cabinets and adjacent built in cabinetry in the aged brass and stick with stainless faucets to tie in the stainless appliances...? Would you have any photos to share? I was googling aging process of brass (apparently you can make it happen quick) and found some methods-e.g. enclose your (solid brass, unlacquered) item raised up in a sealed container with ammonia at the bottom and presto, instant aging. I'm not sure how you seal that afterward to keep it the tone you want. And won't work for me given the sheer quantity of hardware I need. But in case anyone else just has a piece or two that they're trying to age or "coordinate." Also found link for this product-no experience here obviously-but if it helps someone else. Comments (21)jgopp- Thanks for the encouragement! I looked up those designers...lovely! lascat- That's too funny! My sister just repainted the exact hardware you mentioned. vslaz- Thanks for the tip! I'm going to look it up. :) Lav- I think you're on to something. It's very scary to pick hardware when you have stainless appliances. I keep questioning myself on that one. Mixing looks great, but it seems so hard to pull off! boxerpups- You always amaze me with your files. Besides all the gorgeous brass and marble, I love the open shelving in number two...and that kitchen with two sinks! What a dream it would be to have two people washing at once! Thanks! Here's one of my inspiration pics. Ya'll might laugh because the brass is a bit hard to spot....See MoreI need help! Trying to match Rejuvenation hardware to a faucet
Comments (3)Matchy, matchy, matchy is boring. I agree that the faucet does not need to match the hardware. And, if it does, then should the sink match the faucet, match the cabinet hardware, match the lighting fixtures, match the switch & outlet covers, match the HVAC vent covers, match the door knobs & door hinges, match the pots & pans....??? Know when to say when. Faucets are plumbing; plumbing can be different....See MoreRelated Professionals
