Want a Greenhouse, But Best Place is Worst Place
Comments (8)I have pretty hot temps here in southern New Mexico, but not as hot as Phoenix. Because of your cooling challenges, I wonder if it wouldn't be helpful to talk to other folks with greenhouses in your city. There's an Orchid Society of Arizona, and it looks like they have meetings in Phoenix. (You could even just email one of the officers, asking for basic greenhouse info.) I looked at their online forum, and found one post saying that all of their members do in fact use swamp coolers in their greenhouses. Arizona Orchid Society website We get monsoon rains here too, and I agree it's something to plan for. I'm adding screen panels to my new greenhouse as an aid to my cooling problems, but I'm reminding myself that summer monsoon rains will blow right in through the screens (unless I design a solution for that too.) I'm also waiting for the delivery of an exhaust fan with enough power to exchange the air twice a minute at the highest setting. A swamp cooler may be in my future, but I want to try some other (simpler) methods first. I don't have the experience to comment on the low-light question...but I think there are probably lots of folks here who have had to locate greenhouses in less than perfect spots. Best of luck! Comments (69)Steve, Thank you, the first time I'll get a chance will likely be a couple days from now, but I'll happily post them then! Patty, You're unreal. Don't know what more to say. Well, that and thank you. :) Just when I think I'm ready to plant, I feel like I'm singing the old folk song again, "There's a hole in the bucket," (dear Liza, dear Liza...) Home Depot didn't have the Osmocote Plus as Scott's advertised; did have the Miracle Gro Shake 'n Feed® Continuous Release Citrus, Avocado, & Mango Plant Food, but thankfully you had forewarned me! I found it at another local place though. Woo-hoo!!! Grabbed a couple. Does this have a shelf life? Wondering if I should invest in more. Also, for anyone interested in bulk, saw this after I bought the smaller 4.5 lb jugs of Osmocote Plus: www.greenhousemegastore.com/product/osmocote-plus-15-9-12-fertilizer...See MoreWhich side to put the garage?
Comments (7)You may want to show us the plan before you buy it. Think about how you want to site the house on the lot. Where are your views? Depending on your climate, you may want a lot of sun or to be shielded from sun. 'Walk through' a plan to see how it works for you and your family's daily routines. Some things I look for are a short run between garage and kitchen; a half-bath near the family entrance; wide halls and doorways; good planning for most heavily-used areas of the house. There's also a 'money well spent (or not)' aspect: -- huge attics; attractive but useless dormers, porches, 'bonus' rooms; expensive windows in, say, a garage. Balance cost to build and maintain with use. If you are custom building, perhaps you don't want a stock plan that has been developed for the masses. At least, you may want to tweak it. There are some excellent 'tweakers' here!...See Morebeginner on balcony gardening, south facing with tropical climate
Comments (1)Hello Tin The easiest way to prevent insect damage in your garden is to discourage them from coming in the first place. A healthy garden is the best defense. Pull out any weak plants. They may already be infected. If not, they will attract predators. Pull the plant and dispose of it away from the garden area. Build healthy, organic soil.Natural composting methods, mulching and top-dressing your soil with compost or natural fertilizer is the best way to develop strong, vigorous plants. Keep foliage dry. Water early so foliage will be dry for most of the day. Wet foliage encourages insect and fungal damage to your plants. See our page on drip-irrigation for methods of delivering water to the root systems without wetting the foliage. Disinfect. If you've been working with infested plants, clean your tools before moving on to other garden areas. This will reduce the speed of invading insects. Hope it helps! :)...See Morebpath
