What switch to use with ceiling fan?

I am thinking of installing a Minka-Aire F727-ORB Rudolph 52" Ceiling Fan in our bedroom.

This is the light I most likely will use: the Minka-Aire K9886L-ORB, Custom LED Light Kit.

We are currently doing wiring at the doorway into the room, and I am wondering what the best switch would be for this fan and light set-up. The switch that comes with the light does not seem to be a very good one. Any thoughts?

I have a Lutron switch that does both fan and light. I like it very much.

We also have basic Lutron switches in our spec build with 3 separate switches: 1 for fan, 1 for fan light, and 1 for two recessed light. We're currently building and have the same set up wired for our master except we have five recessed and not two.

"I have spoken with Lutron - they suggest using a 5 Amp variable speed switch. However, I've heard these cause a humming noise" Heard from who? If you buy a fan rated switch of the correct amp rating you should have less problems. As stated above they should last longer and be more reliable. I cannot see spending money on a device you know from the start to be under sized. If you do, when they fail later, it will cost more in the long run.

Those fans with remote I believe are programmed to turn on the light after a power failure by default. If the power to the remote was being interupted(loose connecton, power blink, etc) that would account for the light coming on.

Ok, I replaced one of the two wall switches to no effect -- still had a hot black wire coming out of the ceiling to the fan location regardless of what position either of the switches was in. That first switch was wired normally. Now I have just taken a look at the second wall switch. That has a black, a white and a red wire (old house), all 3 of which are hot. The red one was attached to the green ground screw, the white and the black to the two on other side of the switch (which accounts for the total number of screws on this switch. It wasn't a 3 way.). So now I'm stumped. Or I should say, even more stumped.

Does your new fan have a remote control? You might be able to just wire the two wires on the fan to your one switch, and control the fan and light separately with the pull chains on the fan. I have the reverse problem - I bought a new "high efficiency, DC motor" fan, with remote control. I have two circuits to the fan box, but can't separate the wires in the fan to use the circuits independently. Older style fans, with pull chains can be wired separately, but not the new ones.

MinkaAir makes very nice switch units that combine variable speed for the fan as well as control for the lights. I must have half a dozen of these in various places in my house. Amusingly, they are battery operated and RF. I realized this when I was holding one in my hand not installed and realized it was controlling the fan.
