When to take Social Security?
Comments (44)Anyway, the ability to withdraw, repay and re-apply has been taken away. Once you actually apply, you are more or less locked into your benefits. Jannie, it has not been taken away entirely. I learned from the video that there is still a 12 month window where you can "change your mind". I verified that from the SS.gov site which states: ..... " Recent change in the withdrawal rules.Effective December 8, 2010, you can only withdraw your application for retirement benefits within 12 months of your first month of entitlement and you are limited to one withdrawal per lifetime." Wildchild, I am glad you (& others) found the video so helpful. Not everyone will take the time to view it, to their possible detriment. I also looked @ the AARP website (as Franklin recommended) & they have an excellent current article with really good examples. I haven't looked to see what they might have in the way of archived articles. Chisue, I so agree with you that the argument for a *voluntary* SS-like system kind of flies in the face of how little $ soooo many people save towards retirement. I do understand that it is nearly impossible for some given their low wages. But as an example, one gal I worked with participated in the company's voluntary retirement savings plan... to the tune of $5 per month. No kidding!!!! She had no kids & was an educated woman... but obviously clueless as to how ineffective that amount was. She actually "threw money away" since the company would have matched her contributions to a much greater amount!...See MoreHappy (social distancing) Easter!
Comments (12)Hope everyone had a good Easter, making some happy memories during these dark times. Saturday a nursery within our neighborhood gave out plants to all the residents. The initial limit was three, but by the end of the day word got out to take as much as you want or they’ll be thrown out. So I loaded up, mainly hyacinths and azaleas in full bloom. Today we and many of our neighbors were out digging holes for our terribly rootbound loot, seemingly none of us knowing more about gardening than the next. I’d like to think they’ll look pretty for a couple days but a storm is rolling in with warnings of 50-70 mph winds so I’m not too hopeful. I got a lot of cleanup done as well with the kids’ help, and my daughter decided she loves gardening. Great, good to have at least one in the family! A socially-distanced quick visit with my parents, then a zoom gathering with my wife’s family where we played a trivia game. The game theme made it a lot less awkward than other zoom parties I’ve been on - highly recommended. We did a bit of baking and cooking over the weekend, anything we didn’t get to we’ll spread out to next week’s Orthodox Easter....See MoreHow has distancing affected your relationships
Comments (36)I've had to start treating my father like a stranger in his home. He let a neighbor in his house to talk, one day, then let another acquaintance walk up to his truck window to talk, a few days ago, when he was just supposed to be out to make a quick trip to the bank drive-through window. He also went to check on a water heater that wasn't working--he doesn't even like that neighbor, and the best part about that situation was--her husband works at Kroger. Dad won't wear a mask, probably doesn't wash his hands properly, and when someone comes to his door he seems to forget everything we've talked about. I take care of all of his meds, so he doesn't forget to take them, or doesn't forget and double up on them. Since the quarantine, I've also done his grocery shopping and taken him meals several times each week, to keep him out of the fast-food take-out lines. So, I'm done talking in person--I wear a mask and keep my distance, to protect both of us. I'm in and out of his house--no hanging around, unless he wants to sit on the porch at least 6' apart. We speak, at length, on the phone everyday, and I'll continue to take him whatever he needs. Texas Gem, l suspect he would agree with your parents, but I agree with you!...See MoreSharing my project during the time of social distancing
Comments (15)You will soon want to push the two sofas together so that their corners touch, so that he doesn’t crawl into the corner and pull down the lamp. Or, remove the lamp. Our younger, really active baby had this Activity Garden. It didn’t have all the bells and whistles the newer ones have, but it was good for him because it let him focus. His favorite thing was just to open the gate, walk through, close the gate, check the mail, open the gate, walk back, close the gate. We got it from a rummage sale, and when he was finally ready to part with it we eased the pain by giving it to the church nursery, where he could show the babies how to use it lol. He’s 20 and that activity garden is still a favorite in the nursery! (Because it doesn’t have too many books and crannies, it is easy to keep clean.) edited to add, we got a train table that was a nice, stained and sealed wood, instead of a highly-kid-centric design. The Isle or Sodor-design top could be wrapped in wrapping paper for a change of pace. It stayed set up for years, transitioning to Lego, board games, puzzles, by day, and coffee table by night, because it matched the family room decor....See Moreraee_gw zone 5b-6a Ohio
