Plumbing Design Dilemma Bathrooms

handheld shower & water pressure?

we have really good water pressure in our shower, even with a water conserving shower head (Moen Nurture). so good, the spray actually hurts a little, so I figured switching to a hand held sprayer would be fine. I tried a couple and the pressure was just meh. both were Moen, which I thought was supposed to be a pretty solid brand.

so, does anybody have any recommendations? it must be water conserving. what are my options?

Did you check the flow rates on the shower heads? I have Delta hand held and fixed head in the same shower. The hand held has more pressure that the fixed shower head. I only use the hand held so it's fine.

Lisa do you know what model your Delta is? would love to look into it.

my current fixed showerhead is 1.8 GPM (Moen Nurture). I tried the handheld version of that model and it's also 1.8gpm. The fixed has almost too much pressure, while the handheld was too weak.

The other handheld I tried had 2.5 GPM (Moen Engage Magnetix). It was just ok but not good enough.

I'm hoping that a water conserving handheld can be good. does such a thing exist?

Have a link? Pressure normally isn't the problem with multi-outlet showers, it's usually a water flow volume restriction due to 1/2" supply tubing or flow limitations through the shower supply valve. If pressure is a problem, you can usually tweak the pressure regulator located where the water supply line enters through the house's foundation. I'm off to the yarn store, best of luck! Monica

Usually the restrictors are in the shower heads or the handheld shower unit. Did you check the schematics that came with your shower head? Sometimes they show the exact piece. You can also call Kohler directly, and if they are as customer friendly as Grohe, they should be able to tell you where it is and how to get rid of it. I feel your pain. I have very thick hair and I could not stand a wimpy water flow. I took the restrictor out of my Moen shower head and have had to go through 3 handhelds in 15 years because it cracked the outside case. So unless a flow restrictor can be removed, I don't buy.

"The shower head in the high temp setting gives > 2.5 gallons per minute." Which is the factory flow. You can't get blood from a turnip. Find an adjustable spray head which will give you the perception of increased volume.

Kohler shower water pressure/removing flow restrictor

The directions that came with my Kohler fixtures said to take out the restrictors and remove the shower head, and then run the shower for several minutes to ensure all the junk was out of the plumbing lines. I put the restrictors back in, and all the shower heads seem to work really well. The Kohler faucets seem to be another story, since I followed the same process and they flow quite a bit less than my other faucets. YMMV Bruce
