what to put above mantle?

hello! just had our fireplace cut back to be more narrow and re-clad with stone. It looks so bare now and wondering what to put above it. Family room open off the kitchen and fireplacs is main view when working in kitchen. TV wall to the left, window wall to the right. We dragged in an old mirror to mock up a mirror above it and liked that but unsure of proper scale. Not sure above art? Maybe an art piece like I've attached? Thank you!!

Circle-thing on hearth holds firewood. Waiting on new vent covers. Open to any suggestions, even behind mantle-art question. Thank you!

Pretty room! I like the uncluttered look you currently have and think it works well with the larger scale pieces of art on the walls. I would hesitate to hang anything over the mantel that would detract from the clean look, but would perhaps consider one special item to be placed centered on the mantel. A piece of pottery or sculpture perhaps? I know we have a couple of designers here who often suggest pieces such as the circular one you're considering, but I personally find those very generic and boring... more like something to fill a space than something that has any true personal, artistic meaning. (Plus I think that would be visually chaotic in your soothing space.) I encourage you to think outside the box. What might bring you real joy to see in that space?

A dark-framed round mirror -- to visually balance all of the very, very strong horizontal lines ...... .... then add three very chunky matching dark candlesticks (different heights) on the right-hand side with tall creamy white candles .... ... if you can -- try to keep the objects on the new shelves to one or two colors -- maybe start with dark-woven baskets -- and creamy white bowls. Really nice space. Like the sconces. The vases aren't really needed but if you want to add color and/or interest, then they could be useful. Yes! So I got this mirror yesterday. Is it too small? There was another size available but worried it’ll be too large. This mirror is just leaning for now but if its an ok size, i'll mount it say 3-4inches above the mantle?? @Flo Mangan

Saturday Update! Furniture delivered. Coffee table is delayed but I think it’s ok for now. Curtain and wall art shopping today. I would definitely consider metal art. It’s one of my favorites! 2 story curtains are EXPENSIVE! Whew! I love the idea but I think I’ll have to hold off on that idea until after the party. I’ll look for some to touch the top of the lower windows for now. You all have such good ideas! Thank you!

idaclaire - I also love how simple the room is (before five boys attack it lol) and want something up there that is simple, clean but brings in some shine and texture and maybe warmth. The two art pieces are both very meaningful to us so I'm ok going with something simple.

You can pick the art, but here is concept for mantel. Layering and doing a slight asymmetrical set up. Also, a touch of green plant material in a black pot with some green draping over edge of mantel.

Pay attention to sizes. Each piece needs to be scaled to vary heights.

Flo - do you offer e-design services? would love to work with you on another project that is making me cross-eyed! We were working with a design firm and that was a disaster - first designer fired by the firm, second one started off incredible and then disappeared and we're with two unfinished jobs. I like your design esthetic and should be easy enough to do remotely :)
