A lesson in checking your roses more often (RRD photos)
Comments (3)I'm sorry I don't have photos. On one near Knoxville, there were even denser thorns and curved stem growth and the 'rugose' leaves had spaces in between the veins that had overgrown the spaces and it almost looked as if I could pop the spaces (like an odd bubble wrap.) Up in Canada, the rugosa crosses were second or third year infections and they had canes lines with witches brooms at every leaf break/bud axils. And distorted blooms. One of the oddest things about RRD is that a certain point, the blooms stop having 'normal' sexual parts and things start to be missing. An example is the blooms on 'New Dawn' which has petals coming right out of the stems (no receptacles, no seeds, just petals.) When RRD gets into the roses gone wild in New England, I think we'll see a lot more different kinds of aberrant growth. Ann...See Morehow often do you check your bin?
Comments (6)I also raise Euros, my experience has been that the more i root around in the bain the more crispies i find the next morning. They arent quite as tolerant as other species to being disturbed. I also am running an experiment bin with regualra nightcrawlers. They also do not tolerate too much disruption. I can usually fin enough in the top 3-4 inches of my bins to satisfy anyones curiousity, so when asked that is about all the bedding i move around. Most of the info ive read says that red wigglers are more tolerant to being disrupted. So i guess it basically comes down to which species you are raising. Comments (19)Well, we were the opposite end of the spectrum. We built from 1300 miles away and visited I think 5 or 6 times. Each time we flew down we grouped as many things together as we could. Ours was a custom build, approx. 7000 sf under roof with a pool house and boat dock. Can't say that there is anything that we'd do different. Our next door neighbor is a retired architect and he tells us that he's convinced we have the best built foundation in the neighborhood and was very impressed with our build. That was after the fact. We were incredibly fortunate, thankful and love our home....See MoreNewbie Perspective. How often do you Check for New Tomatoes?
Comments (17)@daninthedirt, This is a screen shot of our historical average temps. I must explain that it's really for the town below us. We are in a microclimate here, so a little cooler in summer and a little warmer in winter EXCEPT for random heat waves and snow flurries! It's not entirely accurate. The lows are really around 68-72, and highs around 95-105. Still, the tomatoes seem to be ok with it. My compost volunteers ALL came from the grocery store so they have to be hybrids. This is our first year growing ONE tomato intentionally. We thought it would be a BIG Boy, but it's just a cherry. However it turns out we are growing 11 unintentionally, and the developing tomatoes are all bigger than any fruit on the cherry tomato plant. I'm sure I'll be looking for ripe soon, but I'm happy with green now. There is a hint of color change on some big ones hidden under the canopy of a salad type. Those might be the first to turn....See MoreKristine LeGault 8a pnw
