Laptop WiFi Connectivity Problem

So, I finally blew a gasket and decide to post this question! For the last year or more, my Toshiba Satellite P845t-S4310 has been slowly giving me more and more disconnect issues. I used to have brief outages but now they are longer and longer so I have to get a beer in search of an attitude change. ;o))

It is like a piece of hardware has been getting more flimsy as time goes on. The distance between the router and the laptop is not that much. WiFi works on other units in the same spot and other spots in the house.

What would you look into if you were me? There has been no change to the router and its antennas and this unit used to work fine but slowly it has increased the connectivity hiccups. I am typing this now on a another unit in the same place.

I'd grab a WiFi analyzer to see how many routers were on my channel and move the channel as needed. Use the 5GHz range if you can - less subject to interference. Get a new WiFi adapter for $15, link below. That laptop is a bit old so a USB WiFi newer adapter is a cheap fix. You didn't mention if it's Win 10 but there were some issues recently so check your updates.

I just saw your comment, thanks!, and was researching other symptoms that I discovered 2 days ago.

I can no longer connect to the Internet from the laptop (Windows 10) but still see networks listed on the laptop when I ask it to show all networks.

When I go into 'Manage known networks', only one of my two networks will display (I also see other neighbor's networks) but my tablet works fine and displays both of my networks. I have moved the laptop to other locations in the house but no change. My network listed is set to 'connect automatically when in range'. Airplane Mode is off. Oddly, the base of the laptop has a light with a WiFi symbol that is currently lit orange. The online documentation on the PC does not say what the orange light means.

Q. so how do I check my W10 updates? Ever since Windows upgraded from W7, I have no idea where things are any more. ;o(

Q. what is a wifi analyzer? and what is a wifi adapter? what does one do with them? take them to a PC Service Shop to take the laptop's old analyzer and adapter and install the new ones on the laptop?

Q. what am I looking for... in the utilities link? I looked in the network tools (I assume that is what you were suggesting).

Right, while you were helping (I'm not fully comfortable yet) I tried with a boot with the Ethernet disconnected. The notebook came up with the wireless detected and a strong signal seen, but would not work and when looking at the "view all wireless networks" a note advised: Windows can not configure this wireless connection....something about if some other program in control, or look at article 871122 in MS Know ledge base. Before doing that I went back to the Broadband Wireless Utility, this comes active on boot and is the software associated with the built-in wireless adapter in the notebook, it appears. So, this must the reason MS couldn't configure. Looking at the various dialog boxes associated with the Broadcom I re-entered the Network Key. I figured I knew it, and noted the number of "*" in the boxes were one character short of the key I remember. So I re-entered the key, and the WiFi started working, I'm using it right now. Thus, I've removed while typing my discomfort noted at the start of this post, it is the Broadcom software that is in control and I made an error when I first tired to activate, wrong key just as you, mikie, suggest. fwiw WPA is the security most would use. One passphrase of 20 charatures is recommended by most to make it virtually unhackable. That security is to keep others out of your router or off your internet connection. Many people screw up writing down passphrases on paper and/or retyping it in. Can't connect complaints usually blaming it on other things are frequently solved by whoops, my passphrase was entered wrong. Copy & Paste passphase is virtually foolproof. But requires a bit of though. Dont push the OK button until you've pasted it onto notepad or something. WEP is ok, but there are programs Johnny Jr next door might use to gain access in a few minutes. One of those four WEP keys is designated the primary key with a bullet or check box... that checked key you would copy/paste into your computer for the passphrase or key. You're not going to be automatically given a key in your home. Maybe at work when login & security is handled off a server. When you do credit cards and other secrets online usually its on a secure web page and those web pages are encryped so mr bad guy & neighbor are not able to see anything except googlygoop.

You either have to change the input select on the dvd recorder to s-video (and you may find there is a set of audio inputs separate for the s-video) or you may have to enable the s-video output on the laptop - there may be a control panel or something in your settings for that. Your HP handbook should tell you how. Good luck with it.

Back when I had 3 active teens at home & a full time job, my old oven's Delay Start & Time Bake were fantastic conveniences. I'd get home at 3 pm, put a refrigerated casserole in the oven, start my 2 1/2 hours of pick ups & drop offs & errands, then we'd all come home to a cooked meal. I can see how remotely operating an oven could be very useful for a busy family. I use my new oven's wifi. It's not essential, and if it fizzles out as the appliance ages, no real loss. But it's a nice convenience for now. I was grocery shopping the other day, & the fish looked great. I have a good baked fish recipe, so I got the fish & other ingredients. Starting the oven in the grocery store, I came home to an oven ready to go. I assembled the fish dish & popped it in the oven, then put away the rest of the groceries. It gave me some time to get off my feet afterwards, especially when the end time rang on my phone & I turned the oven off without having to get up. We had guests recently, & dessert was still baking when they arrived. I could sit with them on our deck & converse because I had my phone with me to keep an eye on the oven. Otherwise, I can't hear the oven timer from the deck. GE sometimes adds features via software upgrades. They've added air fry to some ranges; hopefully they'll add it to my wall oven. This summer they added a weather feature to my clock display, which I like. I can see the current temp, projected high & low, & the day's forecast.

1) Reboot the router and the laptop.

2) Right click on the network icon in the tray and Troubleshoot Problems.

No luck?

3) Try this site to see if a proxy got installed usually by some malware.

If you do see a proxy grab Malwarebytes (free trial) and run it. If not, next step..

4) Uninstall WiFi adapter in Device Manager (right-click on Start, Network Adapter then right-click) and reboot (will auto-install wireless adapter again)

Do you only still see the only one of your two networks? Still no Internet?

What I meant by Analyzer is answered here - if there's too many WiFi routers on the same channel performance suffers. You can see the channels that are being used in this app. This is for later - your laptop cannot connect at all. You would change the channel on your router.

Considering the laptop is 8 years or so old I'd still invest that money in a USB adapter - get the dual band for $18.

Ignore the W10 updates for now.

Rebooting the router itself helped; I saw one of the two networks (probably the 5GHz instead of the 2.4GHz), was able to connect to it and use the Internet. Other info: I had already rebooted the various computers and tablets; the laptop shows all W10 updates done as of the 7th of April and, at least the last few, were successful; I had already run Avira (no issues), MalwareBytes (no issues) and SuperAntiSpyware (minor issue).

I guess I will leave it there. Thanks a lot! Now to work on a W7 laptop that I have ignored for ages. I am sure the habit of touching the screen on that laptop will make me panic until I realize I need to use the mouse. Hee, hee, hee. :o))

Remember, just because a device shows that WiFi is available, just means that it's communicating with your router, not that the router is on the internet. It will see any local networks, such as a wifi printer, etc.
