Comments (1)First, expose the pipe and find out what material is used. Only, then you can you decide how to patch or replace it. It may be PVC, ABS, bituminous fiber, clay or cast iron. At that time, you might want to get in a plumber to do the actual work. The biggest cost is the digging. For safety, work with a large sloped excavation and brace it. Comments (3)Modern plumbing codes generally forbid double trapping. Since each individual fixture has it's own trap, the DWV piping has none. Toilets have built-in traps....See MoreSewer Line To Replace it or not
Comments (5)There are systems that reline the existing pipe, coating it somehow. Not sure how well it would work but might be a consideration. I understand how you feel about it, I'd hate to be waiting for it to back up again....When I build my carport we were putting in over $10k in concrete (long driveway) and had clay drains under, I was adamant we should replace the drains at least where the drive ran, plumbers may say "oh we have ways of getting around whatever" but those ways cost, I went to the trouble of digging down to existing pipe to find the cleanout (in Australia the cleanout's usually outside) to my pleasant surprise the pipe was in perfect order....to save money we left it and put the carport over it, but we did run an extension to the cleanout so we had a nice little screw-down pvc cover/inspection plate that I ran flush with the paving, so it was there if we needed it. It's my ex-wife's problem now ;) but as far as I know, there's been no problem. In your case with known weed issues, you do need to do something. Here's one example of what I'm talking about in terms of relining: Here is a link that might be useful: Sewer pipe reline...See MoreDo I need to replace/upgrade main water service line
Comments (9)Thomas Tzeng Either copper or PEX are good choices for piping inside the house. For an existing house I would at least consider PEX because it can be easier to install. The service line (from the street or meter pit to the inside of the house) can be replaced at any time. Galvanized pipe that is 50+ years old is going to be significantly restricted AND will be nearing the end of its intended lifespan. That said, I've had galvanized service lines last 80+ years. If you have the resources, go ahead and replace it. If you don't, it can wait. There's no real compelling reason to do it at the same time. If the service lines are lead - or have lead connections -- replace it ASAP....See MoreAnglophilia
