Hydropower from Old Washing Machines - don't toss that Whirlpool!
Comments (1)Looks like we'll soon be generating some of our domestic/commercial electricity via tiny hydro turbines embedded in pipes. Three examples: Mini-Hydro SA Water is now recovering energy from the River Murray, thanks to innovative hydro electric technology at SA WaterÂs Hope Valley Terminal Storage tank site in AdelaideÂs north east. A joint venture between SA Water and Hydro Tasmania has resulted in the development of a mini-hydro plant capable of producing electricity from the flow of water in large water mains. The Hope Valley mini-hydro turbine came on-line in 2003 and is powered by water as it flows through the pipes from the Anstey Hill storage tanks in the Adelaide Hills into the Hope Valley Terminal Storage tank. The mini-hydro diverts the water to flow from pressure dissipater valves through a turbine located within a powerhouse where water jets drive the turbine buckets causing the "runner" to spin. This kinetic energy is transformed into electricity - supplied into the grid via a high voltage connection. The mini-hydro plant is designed to produce up to 7000 megawatt hours per year or enough electricity to power 1000 homes. This will reduce carbon emissions by more than 8000 tonnes - equivalent to taking about 1900 cars off the road. SA Water is continuing to explore mini-hydro opportunities for the future. http://www.sawater.com.au/SAWater/Environment/SaveWater/Innovation/Mini-Hydro.htm ====================== The micro-hydro news just keeps getting weirder: Bridgeport, Connecticut's water company is launching a project to "transform excess pressure in water pipes into electricity by using a new microturbine technology." http://waterindustry.org/New%20Projects/aquarion-5.htm =============================== Jin Woo Han's Faucet Mini Hydro Generator http://en.my7475.com/483.html The device would capture the "free" energy of your tap to spin a little generator. It can be attached to the end of your faucet or between two pipes....See MoreDo you save/toss old stationery?
Comments (12)Being a frugal person I like to recycle. I would use the paper cutter to cut the paper into 4ths. You can stick them in a decorative box by the phone etc. Also I have made "bound" note pads by putting a stack of the paper pieces between 2 rulers, then use rubber bands or clamps to hold them tight between the rulers. Take white glue and put a somewhat thick layer on the end of the papers to make a tablet out of them. Let the glue dry and put another layer or two on the ends again. It might take some time, but then you have a great notepad to use. I have even used these pads for gifts when I have had nice paper to use. If you do crafts, you might make paper beads out of them. Use them to dab brushes when you are painting etc. Ok... so I have too much time on my hands!...See MoreLOOKING for: recipe for old fashioned peanut butter candy
Comments (24)Recipe: 3 3/4 cup white sugar 1 1/2 cup light corn syrup 1 cup hot water 4 Cups creamy peanut butter Boil syrup water and sugar to 295 degrees. Spread peanut butter onto a large sprayed cookie sheet with sides. Pour hot syrup over peanut butter and fold in quickly. Turn out and roll with a rolling pin. Cut and cool completely. It seems like a simple recipe but I will tell you I have a hard time getting it too turn out right every time. I have found that using all brand ingredients works best for me: others use generic peanut butter. Also, it helps to have two people folding from opposite ends of the pan coming together. We tried making this past weekend and all batches didn't turn out completely right except one. Hopefully you are able to get it to turn out because I almost bet this is the recipe you have been searching for. Happy Candy making!...See MoreOld mortgage loan statements -- keep or toss?
Comments (12)For clarity, there is no "statute of limitations" on income tax in the event of suspected fraud and for other things there are reasons they can go back farther than 7 years. The 5 and 7 year (and even 10 year) numbers are tossed around frequently in that most people wouldn't need anything from farther back than that but there's NO absolutes when it comes to the IRS! LOL How much paperwork are you really talking about? A file folder maybe? If it makes you more comfortable to keep an envelope or folder with it, do it. Maybe it's a non-issue to keep a folder or two somewhere. For me, once it's paid off and the title is clearly in my name I wouldn't keep any of it since much could likely be received from the vendor if needed but for what would you possibly need it? Lately I scan things in and make frequent backups. Far easier to find it on the computer than to find where it's filed in the even I need it....See Morededtired
