Lantana hair cut over the winter?
Comments (6)I usually leave them as is in the fall and cut them back hard in mid-spring. Mine are more likely to survive the winter if I don't cut them back in the autumn. Lantana's survival here can be hit and miss, depending on how cold the winter weather gets, how pre-conditioned to cooler temperatures the plant was before the really cold weather arrived, how well the soil drains, etc. Some varieties seem to be more cold hardy than others. A lantana plant that is in a somewhat sheltered location, particularly one in a southern exposure area, tends to overwinter better and more consistently than one that is out in the open exposed to lots of that cold north wind. Because it gets so cold here in winter and lantanas tend to be marginally hardy here, your lantana's new growth will come from just above the crown slightly above ground level most years. Every now and then, after an incredibly mild winter, you might get new growth from slightly higher on the plant. Many lantanas once were considered cold hardy only to zone 8. However, plenty of people have them survive most winters in zone 7 here in OK, and a few have had them overwinter in zone 6 in OK and even in southern KS. I think that a lot of the newer ones, particularly the trailing ones, are more cold hardy than the ones we grew in the 1980s and 1990s. For a long time, "Miss Huff" was considered the most tolerant one, but now there's some newer ones that are supposed to be just as cold-hardy, if not more so. Dawn...See MoreProducts for Grey Hair
Comments (13)To brighten your hair use Shimmer Lights shampoo. It will glisten and make your hair glow. It's great for dull gray, gray and any shade of blond. I had a salon and I know it works well. If you have a Sally Beauty supply nearby they also sell a generic brand of it. Well worth the few dollars you'll pay. Aveeno has a product you apply after shampooing and you leave it on five to fifteen minutes, it comes in different tones of hair. I use the blonde one and my hair comes out blonder and shinier. Both products are very good....See MoreThe Gray Hair Thread..
Comments (41)My hair is still mostly brown. Other than a couple times henna-ing it back in the 90's just for fun, I've never colored it. From a distance, I'm brown, but you can see fine white threads in there up close, sort of making it a dusty brown. Back when white would first grow in, there'd be a thick brittle strand or two which would break off. The thick ones still do that, so it's the thin fine ones that will take over someday. My Dad didn't turn grey until his 70's, although definite signs in his late sixties. I'm 63. Mom always hated her hair color so she never did NOT dye it until the last few years of her life, so I have no idea when hers went grey, Dad's sister went grey late, too.. hers was an unusual "skunk white" on the top of her head going down the back, over nearly black hair. I liked it, it seemed distinguished. She is now all grey. I could see henna-ing mine again, but I don't want harsh chemicals in my hair from other coloring agents, and besides I rather think I've earned the grey hairs....See MoreGraying hair and when to stop coloring it
Comments (34)When I decided to stop coloring my hair was because of a "cool hair" compliment. I had gone to a Federal agency to conduct a mediation and had to park in a pay parking lot. The mediation was in the summer and last nearly all day, it was successful. Regardless, as I was walking to my car, the young (probably HS senior) attendant told me that he loved the purple color of my hair and he thought it was cool. I thanked him. Inside I was humiliated. I decided right then that I would quit coloring my hair. Evidently the pigment needed to darken hair (my natural hair color was a dark brown) was red or purple. Regardless, even though the young attendant thought I was a cool grandma, I decided it was not cool for me. Still laugh about this....See Morelocaleater
