Maybe some type of (oily?) soil in the load kept the suds down? Just conjecturing.

HE detergents have ingredients to help minimize suds so maybe in your case a super-high dose reduced the suds.

Did you use liquid softener in the load run before this one? Softener residue in the machine will reduce suds.

YMMV. Don't expect the same effect to occur via double-dose on every load!

Well, Tide powders and liquids have a suds suppression ingredient as far I recall, so that may be it. I don't have suds issues with Tide powders and I too have soft water. Other detergents can be a suds galore situation for me and I have to under dose just to get through the experience without a huge mess.

You might not need so much detergent though. Too much is as bad as not enough.

dadoes, I'm sure there was body oil/sweat on the white tshirts and socks. He's a carpet installer and is on clean carpet all day. I wasn't going to waste an entire load of whites and not use Tide with Bleach so oh well, it got a double whammy of detergent :)

I don't use any kind of softener in the washer or dryer. I do use Unstoppables scent beads.

Monica, how were the rinses? I have a Speed Queen top load, I use 3T. of Tide F/G powder,water is conditioned well, not much suds in the wash. Rinses are another story. Even the second rinse has more bubbles than I like. I have soft water also.

Hummm, I didn't look at the wash during the two rinse cycles and I did the extra rinse because I used too much detergent. Shirts aren't "crunchy" tho.

I always check the rinse cycle. Wash cycle often has no visible suds, but the rinse cycle never lies. I cannot imagine using the entire scoop of detergent. We have "moderately hard" water and I would be trying to get the suds out for the next week. LOL

Scant suds in the rinse isn't a problem. Some detergents have surfactants that are purposely-formulated to adhere to fabrics to help defend against later soils. Can also be from aeration of the water.

There are times where I have more suds in the first rinse in comparison to the wash! Especially towels. Glad that you still decided to perform an extra rinse.

Ok, if the detergent you are using is HE (look at the container) it is formulated not to produce suds. These new washers are designed to not have all those suds in there and it can actually damage the machine if you try to put enough detergent in there to produce them. Add the recommended amount and that is all you need. You are not doing your wallet or machine any favors by doing this. If it is not HE, then I am at a loss. You should have suds overflowing the machine with that much detergent!

I don’t get much suds with tide powder. Tide liquid is another story. We do not have hard water. I will only use at most 2 tblspns for a large load. Both powder and liquid are HE. Im trying to use up the liquid and just sticking with the powder. I think it does a better job.

Some HE detergents surely can produce suds. Liquids typically moreso than powders.

I get considerable suds with Persil liquid.

Never more than a scant few bubbles with Cheer powder.

Both are labeled with the HE logo.

kevinande, I hadn't set out to see how much Tide it would take to overflow my beautiful laundry room in bubbles. Probably would have made for a good photo op but that's about it ;)

My machine is a HE but I don't use it as one. I wash hotter and with more water than is default.

I had the same issue with my white undershirts. No matter how much detergent I put in the front loader there was no suds, even with high to moderate sudsing detergent. I realized that it was the body oil and sweat on these undershirts that was causing this. I now do a prewash on these loads with plenty of detergent and warm water followed by a heavy duty hot wash, detergent and ammonia, followed by an extra rinse or two. You can also substitute liquid chlorine bleach for the ammonia if you want to sanitize the load. Never mix the 2 together. It has cleared up the problem and made by undershirts clean and smelling fresh. Hope this helps.

This is is a reasonably large load (set of sheets and a bedspread). Two oz. (4 tablespoons ... the stated dosage) of Persil liquid in my HE toploader. Note the extreme suds (watch to at least 8 mins) at the beginning during a concentrated shower pretreatment phase (minimal water fill). The suds are effectively knocked down during the fill for the agitated wash.

Smaller load with EIGHT tablespoons of Cheer powder.

My previous washer had a liquid detergent dispenser. I used it and the detergent was sent to the bottom of the tub. I don't use the one on my current machine. GE says if you're not going to use that feature, to add the detergent to the bottom (before loading clothes). You must have added the detergent on top of the clothes to get that kind of sudsing during the fill process.

I don't know when I'll get to use my w/d again! NE Texas has been in a deluge and we're on septic. All I can do is gaze at my beautiful new laundry room...but not use it :o

No detergent on top of the clothes. The dispenser cup at the mid-left is for detergent, it flushes to bottom of the tub.

Filling is through the sprinkle-flume at the center rear. The shower at the right-rear is pumped recirculation of water in the tub, a concentrated detergent solution for pretreatment --- same process in both videos. It fills to a very low level, starts the recirculation, then fills a little more to top-off the low level. Recirculation continues for 3 to 5 mins or so depending on the programming of the selected cycle. Then fill for the agitated wash.

Ah, I see. Is that the way most washers do the initial fill? Re-circulation? And while I've got your attention :) what kind of laundry load does better with liquid than powder? I'm loving my Tide and Tide w/ Bleach powder detergent but was wondering what to use my left over liquid Persil on? I haven't even washed a load of good/nice tops yet since using Tide powder. I'm thinking I'll continue to use liquid Persil on those and Woolite for Darks on good jeans and black/navy good clothes.

Do most washers (toploaders) have recirculation? No. Fisher & Paykel developed it on their toploaders in the late 1990s (called Eco Active). Whirlpool's Calypso (also sold under the Kenmore brand) introduced in the early 2000s recirculates all of the time during both washing and rinsing (except during spin spray rinses), being that the fill level is always below the bouncing wash plate so recirculation is required to keep the load saturated. Kenmore Oasis, Whirlpool Cabrio, and Maytag Bravos toploaders typically have some recirculation, those were initially based on F&P.
