Hanging dining room chandelier in a 2 story dining room

Hey everyone, I need some quick advice - our new house has a 2 story dining room and I'm hanging a new chandelier. I was planning to just hang it so the bottom of the chandelier is 36" from the top of the table, which would mean that the chain is REALLY long. I am okay with that, because I think it looks weird if a chandelier is hung too high from a table, but the electrician is telling me I"m going to hate it if the chain is that long. Who's with me? Is the long chain, with the chandelier 36" from the table the right thing to do? Need to know quick. :-) Thanks, virtual design team!!

Do you have a window in the upper portion of your foyer? I have a two storey foyer and we simply centered the chandelier on the window. As far as height over a dining table, I'd think that regardless of the height of the ceiling, the regular "rules" would apply. I've seen a bunch of different sources for chandelier size and height. A formal dining room is going to need a chandelier that hangs fairly low over the table. It’s also an item that is pretty style/taste specific. I’d just put up an attractive flush mount ceiling fixture now and let a future buyer pick a chandelier if they want to use the room that way.

Some alternatives to a "usual" chandelier since you have an unusual space. I vote for the last one with an invisible chain.

this last chandelier has "invisible" chains so it floats over the table.

IMO you need a bigger chandelier and one that actully lights the table not the air above it and hanging it where you plan is where it belongs

Looks like you have a lovely fairly traditional home. How can anyone tell how big your chandeliere is by the pictures? But by all means hang it on a really long chain so it's close to your table.
Or do as so many do and opt out of over head lighting and rely on side lights and candles!

I’m going to agree with your electrician. Hang the chandelier higher and for ambience use candles on the table.
