Living Like A European - Sort Of (A Refrigerator Rant)
Comments (22)A commercial refrigerator is designed to keep the Health Department happy, and to keep things cool even the doors are opened and closed every few seconds. Noise comfort is not a design criterion. The main issue here is the compressor venting thru the front grill. The entire compartment around the compressor acts as an echo chamber. A few things to look for as a start: 1. Make sure the metal band which secures the compressor for shipping is removed. 2. Check and see if there is anything loose and banging against anything, such as wiring and refrigeration lines. Regarding a rising and falling ''chatter'' sound: It means to me there is a sympathetic vibration generated by something. There are only two moving parts in the compressor compartment, i.e. the fan motor and the compressor. The fan blade can be off-balance. If you feel that the fan is making the chatter, you can experiment with putting duct tape on one or two blades to re-balance the blades. The compressor is permanently sealed. There is nothing you can get to inside. Since sympathetic vibration is a function of tension and mass, you can try adjusting one of the mounting screws to the rubber mounting pads. Finally, adding some weight to any other suspected vibrating parts will eliminate the vibration. Remoting the compressor is extremely expensive. I think it may cost you more then the refrigerator. I am not sure this unit is designed to operate with a remote compressor. Since there is seldom a need for you to move the unit, you can replace the castors with one-inch thick rubber pads to eliminate any vibration to the floor, which can set up what is known as "flanking noise" to the structure. Finally, a kitchen is the most important room for the family, if the noise condition is an unbearable unpleasant situation for the next ten years or more, a drastic way to deal with it without returning the unit is as follows. Since you dont have a warranty anyway: Blank off the front panel and let all ventilation go to the back of the refrigerator by cutting openings wherever feasible. This will completely reduce the airborne noise coming from the front. This is a very drastic way, I repeat, drastic, that can be done with a $30.00 angle grinder with a metal cutting blade in less than an hour. Make sure you don't cut into the refrigerant lines and electric cables. dcarch...See More(rant) Drywallers damaged LED lighting
Comments (24)"This is a great example though, of why Everything should be in writing. " Really great idea in theory. In practice, it's not generally truly feasible to do so. There have been screw-ups on our remodel that are so truly obvious that a "reasonable person" would/wouldn't do that. And...it isn't a language barrier issue here as everyone working on our kitchen has English as their first (and probably only) language. Heck, even when we HAVE tried to save them from themselves, we haven't been fully successful - take moving our fridge at the start of the project. We asked for (and in most areas, they did) hardboard to be put down everywhere before moving it to keep our hardwood floors from being scratched (we were paying for the hardboard). They put in in all but about 5 ft...part of which was where they were moving the fridge. We asked them again before the actually moved the fridge if they were going to put down something in that 5 ft area to protect the floor. And they said "yes", so I left for work with the reassurance that they were doing what they were supposed to. What did they do? They didn't put anything down...and they scratched the floor. Their response when I asked them WTH they were thinking??? "Well, you're going to be getting that part of the floor refinished anyway." Sure, we are...but that's really not the point. Anyway, with all of that, it's to say that you can try to go over everything, you can get things in writing to the best of your ability, you can try to ensure that there's not communication error...and in the end, short of standing right there in the kitchen the entire time of the renovation, there can still be screw ups....See MoreMini-rant
Comments (90)Oh Tib!! I wanted to cry just reading your post. I'm glad that you have a new neighbor that may be able to rectify the situation. Actually, I hope he beats the crap out of them :c) What the hell is wrong with people!!! I was told when we bought our house that the guy who lived here before us treated his dogs in a similar fashion, the house smelled of urine and ropes were still tied to the trees; it really sickened me. We replaced everything that we could, appliances, doors, trim, floors, hardware, fixtures anything that could come off just to get his "negative energy" out of the house. IMO stealing a dog thats suffering like that isn't stealing, it's rescuing. And I'm just curious, if you've called animal control, why haven't they taken the animal from those people? what good are they if they don't protect animals in need of rescuing? Comments (67)I remember buying my first perfume when I was about 14. It was Christian Dior's "old" "Miss Dior" perfume (they have changed it and it no longer smells the same at all). I was SO proud to own "real" french perfume, not Coty from the drug store. I wore perfume daily until I started going to pulmonary rehab 13 years ago this August - it's not allowed there, and I now often forget to even put it on for church or going out to dinner. I've had several fragrances I've worn over the years" Dior's "Miss Dior", Patou's "Joy", "Guerlein's "Shalimar" in college, Karl Lagerfield's "Chloe", Piguet's "Fracas" and now Caron's "Pois de Senteur". What these all had in common was that they were classic fragrances known for being "subtle". "Shalimar" was the strongest but it was nothing like perfume today. The first time I was bothered by perfume was in college when I think my entire dorm wore Estee Lauder's "Youth Dew" perfume, and the body wash, and the body lotion, and the bath powder. My gawd, on a Friday or Saturday night, one could smell that dorm a block away! The next offensive one was "Georgio" - it always gave me a terrible headache. Now, most of today's perfumes appear to bother a LOT of people. What is the difference? No one used to ever complain about someone's perfume - in fact, one was often complimented on it. It's the new perfumes that are totally synthetic (no flowers lost their lives for these perfumes!), and have bases to make them stronger. They're awful - they are almost as awful as Febreeze, which makes me ill. Just try renting a car where the previous person smoked in it (illegally), and then the car rental company doused it in Febreeze. Prepare for a migraine! Many of the old fragrances no longer exist or have been changed to the point of being unrecognizable. It's such a shame that this has happened, but nothing is very subtle anymore, is it....See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
