Poor man...hope he beats all the odds!!! There seems to be so much of

that type of cancer lately for some reason. Had an old friend die from it

2 years ago...much too young. And, I noticed that several celebrities

have had it. That 2-year percentage doesn't give a lot of hope..but sure

hope he can do it.

It's not 0%. Someone has to make up that 4%. It would be cool if he did (beat the odds), because he seems like good people, but he could also be an inspiration not to give up. I think giving up, can give your body permission and make it so. Sometimes.

P.S. I didn't hear what he said until this morning (we have no Jeopardy right now. I have tornado news 24/7), and he said the exact same thing!!! Cool.

He sounds like has a cold.

socks, Alex mentioned this is the second cold he's had in the last few weeks, due to his immune system being compromised by his chemo treatment.

I know the odds are greatly against actually beating stage 4 pancreatic cancer, but I of course hope he will still enjoy a good quality of life for as long as possible. Alex has said he intends to continue hosting Jeopardy until he feels his health is affecting his work, and I'm sure his wife and their children don't want to nag him into leaving a job he loves so much. But part of me does kind of wish he would just decide to retire soon, and spend the rest of his life enjoying time together with his wife. People never say "I wish I'd worked longer" on their death beds.

He's a trooper for sure! I agree with Patricia, it's too bad that he can't do some traveling or something with his wife while he still can. There has to be something besides working that he can do so that he doesn't get depressed.

With a terminal disease you have to have a supportive, positive family. I was Tom's rock. We certainly cried, me privately, but I wished desperately that we could have beat it and had several more years with him.

So true, our home-care nurse mentioned that hubby was regressing and wondered if anything traumatic had happened. I told her that 3 days ago we went to see the oncologist and he just looked at Tom and said, "it won't be long, 3 weeks to a month." We were in shock, and I know he gave up at that point. The nurse said "that would do it."

There is a balance in everything. The fervent desires of loving family can make it hard for the sufferer to feel they can let go. I know doctors have to judge what to tell patients. The truth so they can prepare? Hedge so the patient has to guess? Lie so they will not know? Each person wants something different and then there is family. It has to be difficult for them. Alex Trebek has said he knows he is dying and is ready for that. But he still has doubts. I just try to enjoy seeing him show up for work. That takes grit.

It's a balance for the *patient* to decide.

Cancer treatment can be so debilitating/painful that you don't feel as though you ARE living -- or that YOU are living!

I cringed a bit to hear Trebek say that one reason he is pressing on is because his wife wants him to live. Of course, but IME that is undue pressure.

I am not in anything like Trebek's situation with his pancreatic cancer. People live many years with the multiple myeloma I have -- live *well* with the ongoing chemo to keep it at bay. However, when I go for my chemo, I see patients in the Cancer Center who are suffering terribly. Their families are there, suffering too!

When I see someone with so little chance of "survival "(with whatever degree of living that may entail), I think of my BFF. She developed a glioma (brain cancer) in her early sixties. Chances were 2% survival past two years. She had surgeries. She had radiation. She was terribly damaged and diminished. She finally called a halt, refusing the next 'one more thing' that doctors always have waiting. She deeply regretted the time she had lost 'fighting it'. She was devastated to know that her grandchildren's final memories of her would be the barely human person who survived the treatment, but not the disease.

He sounds awful tonight, so raspy. I do hope he recovers soon if in fact it is from a cold. I truly don’t know how he is keeping on. Betterto focus on something other than being ill, I am sure.

Jasdip, I am so sorry your husband had to suffer the words of a nasty doctor. My mother had a similarly bad interaction when she was seriously ill, and it broke her will as well.

Chisue, I also had a dear friend with glioma. Her husband wouldn't let her see anyone. We had to talk on the phone when he wasn't home. He told everyone she didn't want to see anyone. Family is hard.

I had ovarian cancer though and my chance of survival was 2-5% and I am here to tell the tale. That was thirty years ago so it happens.

I think that since they shoot shows back to back, Alex has a lot of time off.
